The cold air intake debate

Ive used one of these http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/msgofast/coldair.html
on my version 5 sti and believe me there is a noticable increase in performance. It takes cold air from the front bar, where the small orange grille is on the my99 sti and retains the sensor before the original airfilter box. And these engines LOVE cold air...as can be seen on a crisp morning vs hot days. FYI and my 2c worth.

It's not about hot or cold air. The air at the lower grill is no cloder than the air from the scoop at the headlight. The problem with CAIs is the MAF signal. If it disrupts the signal, it's bad. Since your car got faster, it is obviously running leaner (since intakes don't advance timing) and leaner is bad. If it doesn't disrupt the signal it was a waste of money.

If anything, it's running a bit richer. To quote the manufacturer of the CAI, "The area at the front of the car is where the highest pressure is, this in turn helps with throttle response and brings the turbo on faster, as well as the fact that cold air reduces turbo lag up to 500rpm".
After fitting the CAI, I can fully agree with his claim. The richness will be rectified this week with a Type 2 Ecutek tune from MRT.

For most cars an air intake is a good first mod. For a WRX (turbo) an intake isn't a good first mod. Your computer controls your car until you get it flashed.
I got an intake put it on, and didn't like it. It wasn't as snappy! Now it's on Ebay.

That was my sales pitch!

Speaking from my personal experience, I always put the most popular parts on my car because they are the best and do most for performance. Afterall, the tuners know what they are doing.
So here is the list of my mods with power increases and prices:
1) Blow-off valve, full atmospheric vent (at least +10HP) $230
2) Cold air intake (at least +15HP) $190
3) Oil catch can (I dont know, +5HP?) $100
4) Turbo Timer (Another +5HP?) $100
5) Radiator silicone hoses and oil/coolant hoses, full kit (Must be good for at least +3HP) $110
So, as you can see, using some of the most popular mods I have seen on the tuners' cars I achieved a nice increase in power (+38HP). I should be putting out around 265HP with these mods. Not too shaby for a mere $730!

In the next few days I am going to install an Injen intake. I am pretty sure that I can do the install without any problem, but I would prefer to have an installation guide just to be carefull. Does anybody know where I can find an installation guide for a '02 WRX?
Thanks in advance.

I just read this whole thread (again) and I find it hilarious how many times BAN SUVS has had to reiterate and quote himself in an attempt to knock some sense into people's skulls.
Stop believing manufacturer claims and marketing propaganda, and realize BAN SUVs makes sense!
