Bored .20 over, P0303, runs rough
Hello i-club!
It's been awhile since I've logged on, 12/03/06 to be exact. I used to live in the bay area but have since moved to Idaho. I no longer own a Subaru, as I sold it to my parents. This is attempt number two to post. I had it all written out, but when I tried to post it deleted it.
Their 2003 Subaru WRX wagon has a Vishnu cat-less up-pipe, an ERZ cat-less downpipe, and a stock cat back exhaust. It also has a Streetlite lightened flywheel (I think...it's the heavier of the two they sell) and an upgraded clutch. It has various other bits which don't matter too much for this discussion, such as springs, a sway bar, 5 speed RA gears, etc. The car currently has about 120,000 miles and was daily driven.
After a series of overheating issues, they took it to an indy shop for a possible blown head gasket. After the mechanic opened the motor up, he found the front passenger piston rod was bent. He had the cylinders bored out .20 over and had the head resurfaced (not shaved enough to change compression, as it was not warped). I don't know what else they replaced, as I am typing this based on what they told me.
Well, the car came out of the shop and runs rough. It will start, run, and drive, but very badly. They say it sounds like it's running on one or two cylinders. They replaced the spark plugs and swapped the coil packs around, with no improvement. They said when you step on the accelerator it doesn't respond well, and that when you let off the accelerator it sounds like it runs better. It is throwing a P0303 for a misfire on cylinder #3. Cylinder pressure is good on all four.
They took it to another mechanic and they said they could try and take it to a Subaru dealership to get a stock up to date ECU reflash.
I suggested checking the fuel injector pressure, fuel pump, and fuel filter. I also recommended they buy a Cobb Accessport, as we do not have any tuners in the area. It probably needs it running cat-less anyways, but I'm not sure what bored .20 over is doing to it, either. I had an Accessport on the car in 2006 with a custom tune, and it did improve how it ran. But I also thought it didn't run too bad without it.
Just looking for suggestions, as they have thrown money at it and are out of ideas. If I remember anything else I'll post up.

Just to make sure, When the first shop did the headwork, did they do a valve adjustment? And Has your parents taken it somewhere that can do a compression and leakdown test? Its a huge guessing game as to what is wrong with the car without getting at least a compression and leak down. I wouldnt be suprised if you have a broken valve as I have seen it happen before.
