turbo charged cars...risks?
im wondering what risks there are if any with turbocharged cars? cause im planning on buying a new wrx, but i never driven a turbocharged car before and don't know much about them...is there like any risks to myself or the engine and what are they?..
ie..i was wondering what would happen if you downshifted into and your rpm is above the rpm which the turbo would kick in...

The turbo is driven off the exhaust gasses, messing up a downshift will not harm a turbo. The tranny and engine yes but not the turbo.
Unless you do some poor thoughtout/quality mods you don't have to worry about the turbo for a long long time. Just use good quality oil and change it often.
Check out this site for more info on how turbos work.

Typically turbo charged cars are not considered "reliable" if you beat the hell out of it of course liek anything it will break or wear out.. Over the years they have gotten better but as long as you take care of it and dont beat the **** out of it.. there isnt a reason to worry.. and if ur that afraid just get the 5/100,00 mile warranty.

dont worry at all, its not an after market turbo, its a stock turbo which is perfect reliability for the WRX. its only boosting 7psi which is very safe. and the WRX block is made for turbo so its extra strong.

of course you have to get used to but driving turbo is not that different from driving NA, unless you have a huge aftermarket turbo

I've had my WRX a couple of months now, very happy with it.
As others have said, it's a stock turbo and the engine it built around it, so you shouldn't have any worries unless you start fiddling around with mods. Even then, so long as you know what you're doing it seems to be safe and reliable.
Turbo kicks in after a slight lag - few seconds - where the turbine winds up, so if you're decelerating and you downshift, chances are your rpm will drop back below turbo range before it's up to speed anyway. If your RPM is high enough that the turbo does have time to wind up on a downshift, then either you're racing or you need to work on your driving habits.
Unmodified WRX Turbo kicks in about 3000RPM after a wind-up delay of ooh 2 or 3 seconds. Do NOT try and kick it in below 2nd gear or your tach will rocket towards redline (7000) and your speed will fall to almost nothing. Optimal gears seem to be 3rd and 4th.

why not kick in the turbo in 1st gear??
Um, cos the time I tried it I wound up going slower than granny's Geo Metro?
Maybe I was doing something wrong - wasn't trying to race or nothing, just get out of a parking lot before an oncoming car - but I lost all power when that Turbo kicked in 1st gear, felt like I was driving in molasses.

Guess I'll try it again, I don't think the engine was fully broken in at that point - like I say, I wasn't intending to rev it like that, I just pulled out, found I had less space than I thought and gunned it on instinct... only to find myself moving like a stunned snail.
