My mom is considering getting a new tv. She is looking for something around a 55" Screen Size (Not a Plasma). What tv's are worth looking at currently for that size (or around that size as her current tv is a 46" screen size and she is looking to up-size)?

On the flipside, is there any particular tv's to avoid currently in the 55" size?

TIA

Samsung LED TV's.. Honestly you can get a 55" but I have not had a better experience with larger screens. When I was shopping for a TV for my parents I was looking at quality of image versus how large and for the cost of a 46" Samsung LED TV they not only love the image display but also much preferred it versus their 55" Sony. So all in all for the cost and the quality I would say samsung however others may have other opinions.

On another note my friends just bought a Vizio 55 inch and the quality isnt that bad but it has a bunch of features like smart TV and what not which is pretty cool. It is definitely a noticeable difference in quality though.

If your mom does not want 3D i can recommend the Toshiba 58" TV (58L7300U)
For me it was a great upgrade from a 2007 vintage 42" LG TV

Got mine last Dec, amazing picture, which is really what i was looking for.
it has smart features which are fine, interface is a bit slow but that was not the priority for me. has enough inputs and really good pricing compared to the Samsung TV's that have a lot of features i knew i didn't need & didn't want to pay for.

Samsung makes the best panels, period. Sony uses the exact same panels as Samsung supplies them, but the implementation isn't always as good. They would still be my first two choices.

I've had my Samsung 55" LED for around 2 years now and it is easily the best TV I've owned.

I bought an insignia 720p plasma 42" from bestbuy about 5 years ago with a 4 year protection plan for a total of 500 bucks.
just shy of the warrenty it crapped out with a line thru the panel....
I got a replacement but because they didnt make the tv anymore they gVe me the next in line which was an insignia lcd 42" but it was a piece of crap so I got to take it back and the lady gave me a 43" samsung plasma.....
Being happy I just got a brand new tv at the end of a warrenty was awesome. now 1 year down the road and the samsung plasma has developed a line thru the whole panel.

Time to upgrade to a new samsung led.

I also own a Vizio E series that I picked up last Black Friday because it was cheap and my Sharp got stolen. It has surprisingly good brightness, good color and sound, though it is only a slight improvement over the Sharp (~5yrs old) and is nowhere near the picture quality of my Samsung.

Go to Costco. Get a flatbed cart. Go to the TV section. Grab a 55" Vizio M. Check Out. Drink beer and pat yourself on the back.

Avoid Sharp. Avoid Samsung (unless it's the really, really pricey LEDs).

Vizio is king. There are no more excuses to not buy one. The 55" was so good I bought the 60" and put the 55" in my bedroom.

It's so good I want to replace my older, not that great 42" Vizio i got back in 2008, even though it's working fine. (The 42" is acceptable, but the new Ms are EXCEPTIONAL).

M or E?

E is the best of the cheapest bunch, but doesn't have, what I believe to be 10bit panel like the M. (Not to be confused with 10bit (30bit) color)

So this one is the reccomended model?

http://m.costco.com/VIZIO-47%22-Clas...100049046.html

I would go 55" but its 979.00 vs 599.00 for the 47"

I got a Samsung UN46F8000, I've used Vizio's and this is by far the best TV I have ever owned. Especially if you have a DLNA enabled smartphone
