paging wombatsauce

I am having Justy wiring problems.

1990 Justy GL mpfi 5 speed with 4x4.

The main fuse is blowing with the ignition off.

I have continuity between positive and negative battery leads indicating a short. When I take out the top (rear most) 30 amp fuse in the engine bay continuity goes away telling me the short is connected to that fuse. I have the service manual and wiring diagrams but I guess I can't read it well enough to figure out what is connected to that fuse.

Can you shed any light on my predicament?

I used to have wombatsauce's phone number but have lost it. If anyone knows how to get ahold of him please direct him to this thread. I would really appreciate it.

Xoxo

The "top" missing fuse seems to be the one with the short. It is not blowing it's self but the main 60 amp fuse is.

With the top fuse out and the ignition off I have no continuity between battery leads.

MmmMmmMMMMmmmmmm womb sauce. Yeesh.

Anyway - my apologies for the delayed response there. After all that, I really cannot be of any help - that sounds like a crazy problem. Of all the things I have done with and to a Justy, I have never done any troubleshooting of the electrical system beyond the ignition (dreaded alternator wire failure).

My knowledge-free guess at the issue would be that the main lead from the battery is worn somewhere and contacting the body, or there could be a very strange issue with the alternator.

Any other symptoms before this? Did you ever get both the "brake" and "battery" lights on the dash? I ask because this can indicate an alternator problem.

I would go to the Justy Forum if you have not already. There are some very helpful and VERY knowledgeable people on there. A few people actually race these cars.

Alas, I no longer have my Justy. I gave it to a friend.

I will check and see if I have any wiring diagrams. There may be some on the Forum as well. At least that would help trace the connections to that fuse.

Delayed response? lol you responded on the same day. I would say that is pretty good! and I appreciate it!

My knowledge-free guess at the issue would be that the main lead from the battery is worn somewhere and contacting the body, or there could be a very strange issue with the alternator.

Inspected the battery leads, cleaned them first with baking soda and warm water, let them dry and cleaned with deoxit. They had a little corrosion but not that bad.

It is my girlfriends car and she is the main driver so I can't speak to symptoms.

I am on the justy boards but the site is slow. I thought this would be faster.

Alas, I no longer have my Justy. I gave it to a friend.
Nice gift! I hope they take good care of it!

OK so I messed with wiring yesterday. I cleaned the battery leads and any connector I could find got sprayed out with deoxit. Now I am scared because it is running again with out tripping the main fuse but I am not sure what was wrong!

Now that I have gotten it running...YES the car is intermittently bringing on the brake light and battery light. (I asked my girlfriend if it had been doing that before and she said yes. I asked "why didn't you tell me?!?!?") I will concentrate today on the alternator. I will do new connectors on the alternator wires and perhaps give it a new/better grounding wire. If that does not take care of the brake/battery light I will have the alternator tested. While running I am seeing ~14 volts across the battery so I hope it is good.

Is the alternator light thing a common problem with an easy fix??

OK So I think I found the short. It is where the wiring harness goes under the intake manifold (alternator wires and fuel injector wires and some sort of sensor going into the block). Why the **** do they make it so hard to work on cars. There is a **** ton of room in the engine bay. Why the **** does the harness need to go under the intake manifold?!!? I cant seem to fish it through so I am just gonna cut the whole thing.

Wish me luck. Off to cut a wiring harness in half....
