5 top breweries, unless I'm forgetting something:
Anderson Valley Brewing Company
Anchor Brewing
Rogue
Deschutes Brewery
Mendocino Brewing Company aka "bird beer"
Having said that, there are lots of fabulous breweries to choose from these days. It's such a great time to be a beer lover.
"There is no such thing as bad beer. Some beer is just better than others."
- some home brewing book I have somewhere.

Fire rock is most tasty...I bought some stuff called Shocktop the other day, it's some sort of wheat beer that is brewed by Michelob (I unfortunately did not know this till I got home). It's closest to a mix of SN wheat and Blue Moon, but something just didn't taste right about it and 2 bottles (2!) gave me the WORST headache/hangover...no bueno

went to BevMo tonight and found a unique brew from Stone Brewing...
Stone Cali-Belgie IPA.
its your traditional IPA done in a Belgian style... i dont know all the details of it, but upon first (and many more) sniffs of the aroma...
you can smell the tell-tale bitterness of hops from your standard IPA. a deeper wiff reveals a SWEETNESS to it...
it has a beautiful golden red hue, a hearty full flavor and its very light on the carbonation. the hop flavor lingers a bit, which is very welcome. its has a very light weight on the tongue and stomach, but delivers a nice kick to the blood stream.
anyone a fan of IPAs should really give it a try. but, on the tag at BevMo, it states that is a VERY limited run of this beer...

This summer I did a little road trip of breweries on the north coast and these were my findings.
I'm a fan of darker beers with Moylan's Kiltlifter, Rogue's Shakespeare Stout, and Lost Coast's Downtown Brown coming in on top.
On the lighter side Blue Moon is a winner and for those who like it I'd also recommend Lost Coast's Great White. On the more "exotic" and more feminine side Lost Coast also makes a pretty good Tangerine Ale.
