Looks like I got it backwards. E85 is super clean on CO%, but still will have some HC. If catless the tune would have to be perfect to burn up everything...
This means if I still have to do the sniffer I'm going to have to put at least 1 cat back in. Though I'm going to push for the ECU only check first.

No idea, I'm not a tech and I didn't even look at his workstation or monitor during the process. My car was plugged in via OBDII when he asked. Not sure if he was messing with me or if it does show so I can't confirm if it does or doesn't. Only thing I can confirm is that he asked me.

Can't wait to tell him he's going to have to SMOG the car soon, and how it's going to be like $60 for a 10min check... Cheap ***

All those hybrids out there with CELs will finally have to get maintained as well. We have quite a few customers that are driving priuses with bad cells and refuse to replace the battery. Next smog will cost them $2800 or so.

Question for someone who knows this more than I do...
Does this mean that theoretically if your downpipe looked stock enough to pass visual, even if it were catless, that you could roll in and pass this new test if the stage 2 flash doesn’t throw any codes and shows that all systems are good?.

Impreza passed easily, but it had to be the old the test. Having the car BAR'd is useless in trying to smog it with the new regs.
The computer asked what year the engine is, then asked for some sort of ID# off the BAR sticker.
Then proceeded with the tailpipe test like usual.
So for a 99 car like me, if I'm catless, I'll have to swap the DP every two years. Just how it is.

curious if some of you (@SkizzDawg in particular) could PM me and tell me where they got theirs done? I've got a catted DP, custom map on an AP, and an EL header - would rather not swap crap out again, even though it's already been 2 years.
I think my wildcard would be that one monitor (misfire something or other IIRC) is turned off via my tune to accommodate a lightweight flywheel.

Just completed smog, 2002 WRX. Passed. No sniffer. Visual was a little more intense than usual.
Regarding the downpipe questions - It's probably a good idea to go ahead and swap on the stock downpipe unless you have a way to get the stock heat-shielding on to cover it up and are super confident that will do the trick. Having anything jump out (like a downpipe) can lead to a more thorough scrutiny and it seems like the visual is paid a little more attention now that there is no more sniff test.
In a few years it may become like Nevada where they plug in the OBDII and that is it. For now, be prepared for a visual inspection.
