So my registration is due next month but I'm selling the car. I have a potential buyer lined up next week. Does it matter if I pay the reg? Or can I leave the dues for the new owner?

Ok edit. cus my husband said i am wrong cus i am thinking of my old state. He says you have to register it and make sure it passes smog. Unless someone else says different thats what he said.

You have to make sure it's smogged. As long as the car is currently registered I don't see any problems.

well there is a "smog abatement fee" on the renewal notice. Does this mean I still have to smog if for the new owner? My car's a 2003...

So you guys are also saying I have to pay the renewals fees regardless?

if you sell it before you have to renew it then no you dont have to register it.. but you do have to smog it to make sure it passes.

the smog certificate should last you 180 days. so you can sell it within that time and dont have to resmog it

I thought smog certificates were good for only 90 days

you'll have to do the smog, but the registration is not required as long as your sell the car before the deadline.

as a buyer I would always ask when the registration was paid

You'll have to smog it since its "4 model years" or more old, the certificate is good for 30 days. It's a plus to the buyer if you do the registration, I did it for my SVT i just sold after I bought my WRX. But mine didnt need to be smogged (was an 04) and the registration was only $118.

ive sold a car without smoging it, witht he buyers OK

Ive also bought an rx7 without it being smogged, took it to get it smogged, they said coolant was coming out of the exhaust (cracked rotor housing)

I got my money back in court by saying the owner didnt smog it before the sale.

so if youre trying to rip someone off, smog it

no i'm not trying to rip anyone off lol. I was just wondering about how the reg fees work if you're selling your vehicle.

I guess I'll do the smog and everything.
