Looks like fun, I have Mt. biked around the Ord many times but have never gone for a hike around the main base part of it.I know there are many parts that are marked for unexploded ammo so deff. stay away from that stuff! I would be down to go out there sometime as well.

I was stationed there for 7 months for training before going overseas in 1968 and have driven around it a little a few years ago - stranger still if you have a few memories. But Chernobyl - check this out - a MC tour through http://www.kiddofspeed.com/chapter1.html

Bruce - with your luck I wouldn't go anywhere near where there might be un-exploded ordinance.
Seriously when the College opened there, they told people not to go off the marked paths because of undetonated shells
I hear that somewhere out there is a French Village that was setup for Commandos to train at during WWII

not sure if already mentioned, but the main reason Fort Ord was chosen as an army base was due to the heavy fogs that carpet the area in the area, perfect cover from sea bombardment.
Fort Ord was pretty cool, some ghost stories there and of course several murders of people in the abandoned housing areas.
Recommend staying out of the fields inbetween the gas station and the entrance to Laguna Seca...they (Army and EOD) are still detonating unexploded ordnance out there.
Also, you are trespassing on Federal property if caught.....and there is security out there. Both the DoD Police and Marina Police Department patrol the area.
If caught, you'll most likely get escorted off the property.
Highly recommend not performing gymkhana in any of the areas that would otherwise be perfect for it....A. the pavement sucks, B. lots of glass and nails and crap to be found, C. Drawing the base security's attention.
There are some roads you can get on if you know where they are, but no lights + deer.....
I actually miss driving around that place, especially the back side near the Marina airport...used to be my daily track to work no roads like that in Japan (at least in the Yokohama area)....

We didn't venture into any areas that would have been dangerous, like open fields or the beach... We stayed on the main roads and were inside the factories and houses... The place was a ghost town, NO ONE around,.

We went to play airsoft there a good 5 or so years ago, and during the game some guys came into one of the houses to clear it and set up a sniper nest when they came across a dead body...
Someone was murdered there and left in the house. The body had been there for a few days. Turns out that the police found out who did it and made arrests for the murder. Pretty creepy though!

Dude, it was very foggy and misty, I can't imagine what it'd be like during the night time!
We were all walking and thinking... Man, if this were a warzone, it'd be a sniper's dream!
It's totally weird, it's basically like a whole city that has been abandoned. It was abandoned in 1994, so some of the stuff there is still recent, like the housing and stuff, but there is def stuff there from WWII and the 50's... It's weird just walking around and seeing empty spaces everywhere. It was like Chernobyl...

They do airsofting over there still. If you make a right when getting off the 1CA you'll see a big *** area fenced off with barracks. That area is hella dope to airsoft
