im worried about my piston rings, because i have to add oil every 1000 or so mile. i mean i know how a turbo charged car can eat oil but my car is burning oil way way too fast. anyone had a similar problem? or would know how to go about finding out what the real problem is?

my car is a 2004 STi with injen intake helix up/downpipe, GT spec cat-back
as you can see no serious mods so whats the deal with my car? why is it needing oil every 1000 miles, i dont mean add one quart... i mean its all gone. all but one quart

plz hlp, thanks

Subaru actually considers up to 1 qt/1000 miles to be within the normal range for oil consumption. Most other manufacturers follow this spec as well. Since you are still under warranty, if you think your car is using oil excessively you can have the dealer perform an oil consumption test, they will change the oil and have you return at regular intervals to check the level. If the engine is indeed found to be using more oil than specified they will repair it. However you should be prepared for the possibility of the dealer giving you a hard time about the mods you have done.
Also are you using the proper viscosity of oil as recommended in your owners manual? Failure to do so can result in higher than normal oil usage.
Oh and BTW why did you replace the uppipe on your STi, it's already catless from the factory?

ok so this is it, on dec 29 i had 20475 miles, now i have 21864 and thats a difference of 1389... and i am on low for oil... im guessing about 3-4 quarts are burnt up. oh ya, and as for the mods, im taking my car back to stock because i dont want to risk voiding the warranty

and mulder, yea i installed the helix catless downpipe, and the stock downpipe has one cat in it i think, and theres one pre cat in the up pipe

There's only one quart between the full and empty marks on the dip stick (it is on almost all cars at least, I just assumed it is on WRXs too...). So if you're going from the full mark to the empty mark in 1000 miles, that's 1qt/1000mi...'normal' according to Subaru.

acualy theres oil on the dipstick but below the L
so im going to have the dealer run the test on it to be certain

umm.. make sure you go back to stock before you take it to the dealer. You will get your warranty voided if they see you have all those mods installed.

Oh and only the WRX's have a cat in the upipe.

WRX= 3 cats (down pipe, mid pipe and up pipe
STI= 2 cats ( downpipe and the mid pipe)

Above is correct, you replaced your uppipe for nothing.

acualy the new up pipe is quite a good buy, its larger diameter on the inside and it has a flex joint to get rid of annoying rattles and noises. my car is running catless and it still sounds clean. the up pipe helps but all WRXs sound nice anyways.
