View Full Version : Sacramento Area Suby Gun Owners Meet 2/26/05
We've been kicking this around for a few months and it's time to act.
For those of us that like to go target shooting, it's time to get out and do some plinking.
We have a couple of choices for location:
1. Cordova Shooting Center out on Sunrise (just past the old S2 shop) http://www.cordovashootingcenter.com/
2. Gun Room near Grant Line & 99 (aka the boonies) http://www.thegunroom.org/
Suggest others if they exist, but these are the only two locals I know of.
Each location has it's advantages. The Gun Room is indoor, 20 lanes of pistol. Cordova is outdoors, but offers 30+ pistol lanes, 20+ rifle lanes, and several skeet and trap ranges. Both facilities rent guns for those that may not have their own.
I was thinking about 2/20, 2/26, or 2/27. Let's get some discussion going and make this (finally) happen.
EDIT:
We'll be going here on Saturday 2/26/05: http://www.commercemarketplace.com/shops/goshoot/
There is a map on that site. I'm saying 10am for now unless someone has a huge problem with that. I'll stay at least until noon or 1pm.
nachomc 02-08-2005, 10:58 AM I could probably go, but I don't have a gun and I've never shot one.
So yeah.
ryball 02-08-2005, 11:00 AM I vote the Gun Room, because it is down the street from my house and I might be able to trick the wife...
"Honey, I'm going out to get some groceries and to fill up the tank on my car."
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
"Hi, honey, I'm home. The grocery store was closed."
But I know it doesn't matter what I say, you guys are just going to steal my meet and pick a day I can't go. hahahahha!!! Anyway, I might have to pick up my new wheels...
Paul@dbtuned 02-08-2005, 11:01 AM How about the following weekend, 26the.
I have my ISO survailance audit on the 23rd & 24th and will really need to blow off some steam and anger afterwards.
ryball 02-08-2005, 11:01 AM I could probably go, but I don't have a gun and I've never shot one.
So yeah.
That's okay, I'm sure that there are enough of us that are versed on gun safety that wouldn't mind keeping and eye on you and teaching you the basics. We'll start you off on the .22 with Ed.
soggynoodles 02-08-2005, 11:07 AM wait what? I don't have a gun. Can I borrow one or should I get me one of those "saturday night specials" :p
I've got a couple of .22's the new guys can use - plus .22 ammo is cheap. :)
I can make the 26th work too. I forgot that we need more than a couple of weeks for proper planning. ;)
sybir 02-08-2005, 12:28 PM Another n00b here, I'm down.
ryball 02-08-2005, 12:33 PM We can't have too many noobs... let me rephrase: I would rather not have more noobs than experienced people. We experienced people will likely have to "vouch" for you and I would rather not have to be responsible for more than one person.
I'm sure Lance will come - he's another experienced gun owner.

Yea, .22 are overall pretty good guns. I was looking into getting one for me. :D

I hear that. No biggie.
ryball 02-08-2005, 02:17 PM don't worry, we'll get enough people.
Salty 02-08-2005, 02:25 PM Stay clear of Cordova if you have a bunch of beginners.
My Grandfather and I used to be good friends with the owner of Cordova but I’m not sure if he (Art) is still around. The range masters can be a little on edge and are very impatient. They've seen n00bs do it all so they have a right to judge. You guys will be walking on eggshells unless your combined range etiquette is top notch.
I was out there a couple years back and actually saw a father take his son downrange during a hot session. Nobody got hurt but it certainly was a major physical dispute... I have also seen people get burned for much less.
If you decide to shoot rifle then I highly encourage you to goto Sacramento Valley Shooting Center: http://www.commercemarketplace.com/shops/goshoot/ It's out towards the Sloughhouse/Rancho Muerita area but HIGHLY worth it. The facility is top notch, clean and they are more patient with beginners. Just be sure Mike, Lance, Paul or whoever gives everyone the runaround on range etiquette and common sense saftey before you breech the gate. I used to shoot 300-1000 yard rifle all the time out there.
Other than that, The Gunroom is a good choice for pistol and small caliber rifle (I think they'll do .22 rifle?).

You coming with us Eric?
pbchief2 02-08-2005, 03:53 PM The guys at the gun room are the same way , or at least the lady that works there is. But erics right about cordova they will sit there and look for reasons to kick you off. Ive been asked to leave twice once for firing more than 1 bullet a second and again for not letting them clear a misfire.
pbchief2 02-08-2005, 03:54 PM Oh yeah name the time and Ill be there. Ive been looking for a time to try out a few new guns, and its time to rotate my ammo
That's weird - I've never had a problem at Cordova. I saw them talk to one guy who was rapid firing, but they just asked him to read the sign above his head that said "no rapid fire". They are anal about the rules, but that's what I would hope for in a gun range.
pozzi 02-08-2005, 03:59 PM i have a small collection my grandfather left me...
but the problem is, i have never registered them and they all need to be disassembled and lubed and maintanenced before I could use any of them...
do gun ranges check to see if the pistol is registered?
i don't want to get in trouble by bringing down some stuff not on the books.
i have a few others too, like rifles and such that i'd like to find out about if i need to make them 'legit" too.
i know the AR15 i can't do anything with but hide it until red dawn happens but the others are legal as far as I know.
i'd love to break these out of storage just to fire them, but i don't want to have o hand them over becaus ethey mean a lot to me because of who their from.
pbchief2 02-08-2005, 04:08 PM No they wont check if they are registered.

It was'nt just letting whole clips go. I was pulling from a holster and then two rapid shots. It takes a little practice to keep your pace under 2 seconds, there was no warning aand no other violations according to them:(
pozzi 02-08-2005, 04:13 PM woohoo!
maybe i'll have to get to cleaning and puchase some ammo!
now i just have to worry about transporting them there.
is there a way to get these all registered legitamately so i don't have to worry about them?(besides the AR15)
pbchief2 02-08-2005, 04:26 PM No Your just gonna have to turn them over to me:( I'm sorry;)
pozzi 02-08-2005, 04:56 PM nevar!
Salty 02-08-2005, 05:01 PM They are anal about the rules, but that's what I would hope for in a gun range.
Absolutely. And this may be the very reason you'll end up going to Cordova.
Numerous "Ricer" WRX's in the parking lot + 50% of novice shooters= Look at me!
Trust me man. Try the Sacto Valley Shooting Center. You'll probably never goto Cordova again. Not to mention, you can probably find a few nice roads out in the Sloughhouse area. I think there's a fun little strip just off the Range driveway.
sublime1 02-08-2005, 07:15 PM I'd be down for any place with a rifle range.

SVSC isn't really all that far from Cordova so I'd be willing to try it out. It's fairly close for Ryball too. :)
Slack 02-08-2005, 10:57 PM I'd be interested in going as well, no guns, although my roommate does so maybe I can get him to join me, and I haven't been out shooting since I was like 13.
Mr. Xevious 02-09-2005, 01:28 AM can I bring my Browning .50 cal ?

Are you talking about the water dispenser next to you? :p
No, I was talking about the Armored Box Launcher full of Tomahawk Cruise Missiles. :D
ryball 02-09-2005, 11:34 AM If I can convince my wife to borrow her truck, I will try to bring this...
If you want to shoot it, though, bring your own ammo. It gets kinda expensive.
yzercyber 02-09-2005, 11:41 PM I'll bring the 30-06 if i can get the rack duct taped into the WRX. Then again, maybe not... Shooting in a range is like lust in a condom.
EricDaRed81 02-10-2005, 02:50 PM I'll go if I'm not working. I've shot 12 guage shotguns and a .22 rifle but I'm not what you call experienced.
RussA 02-10-2005, 03:50 PM Hey, isn't a brown man running with a fire arm Probable Cause?
lol, ouch....
soggynoodles 02-10-2005, 03:56 PM Hey, isn't a brown man running with a fire arm Probable Cause?

Paul@dbtuned 02-10-2005, 04:26 PM I hope you eat some KFC!
Now that's just mean.
STiPilot 02-11-2005, 01:23 AM I'm in for a indoor range. I haven't shot my pistol in awhile!
Double Phister 02-11-2005, 09:57 AM I've fired a .22, an SP89, and a Desert Eagle 50. I sucked at the DE50. Way too much anticipation.

I still do that with my Beretta Elite II .40. It takes a couple of clips before I get back into it.
nachomc 02-11-2005, 10:50 AM Ballers run dual elites. I capped some guy in the head with dualies the other night.
RussA 02-11-2005, 10:52 AM I was cappin people with a K98 the other day ;)

nachomc 02-14-2005, 03:16 PM What time would we meet? I found out on Friday that I'm working on the 26th and it will probably be an all nighter..
Pick a time. I would say late morning so we have time to go home before going to the meet.

Wingless Wonder 02-19-2005, 08:57 AM Guys, for those that haven't used firearms before I want to mention that the most important thing you'll learn from the experienced owners is safety and etiquette at the range. The rules are in place to prevent injuries at both indoor and outdoor reasons. All it takes is for one inexperienced person to cause injury or death because they were concentrating on just shooting the weapon and not so much on proper handling.
It's also important for first-timers firing semi-automatic pistols because they will become confused if the weapon should somehow jam. I saw one guy try to clear a jam and turned to face straight down the firing line to do so. If his weapon had discharged, the round would likely have ricocheted and struck someone. I observed this at Cordova. It also couldn't hurt for newbies to sit out the first firing session just to observe how the routine goes.
Notice how everyone pays close attention to orders barked by the range master over the PA. The inexperienced stand out because those are the ones who will try to squeeze off 'just one more shot' after the call to lay the weapons down on the bench.
Learn gun safety and you'll have more fun during the actual shooting part. :)

Good advice. Who's going?
soggynoodles 02-19-2005, 11:03 AM I'll be going. :)
Paul@dbtuned 02-19-2005, 04:54 PM Here's a sample of what I have...as I can't bring them all, the two rifles and two pistols that receive the highest vote will go.
Salty 02-19-2005, 04:59 PM What kind of Mauser is that? Looks almost like an M38 Swedish eventhough it's not. Persian?

Nope.
It's a Yugo M48 in 8mm...I have 2 of 'em; one I shoot, one for mini Oaf when he's older.
Come to think about it, I two of almost every weapon. :D

Here's a good link to typical gun range safety rules:
http://www.losaltosrodandgunclub.com/rangerul.html
ryball 02-22-2005, 11:58 AM Some of the more important rules:
7. Firearms MUST BE POINTED DOWN RANGE at all times, except when transporting to and from the firing points, when the MUZZLE WILL BE POINTED UP.
8. Firearms should never be pointed above the target stand. When shooting come up from the bench and sight directly at the target. DO NOT POINT THE FIREARM IN AN UPWARD POSITION AND COME DOWN TO THE TARGET. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER AND OUT OF THE TRIGGER GUARD, except when you are actually squeezing off a shot.
25. In case of a miss-fire (failure to fire or hang fire), Keep your firearm under control and the muzzle pointed down range for at least one full minute, before attempting to eject the cartridge.
ryball 02-22-2005, 12:00 PM 2. Everyone going on the shooting range must pay an entrance fee, except for babies in arms.
babies in arms. :rotfl: I have this picture in my head of a militant band of babies...

Whew! I just got back from digging a hole.
A large hole.
A three-body hole.;)
Obviously, after looking at my target, it's safe to say that I couldn't hit the broad side of a large barn.
The 2nd pic is Egan experiencing the massive recoil of the powerful 9mm Parabellum round. The target 2nd from the left is Lance's; after 1 or 2 shots, it experienced a fastener malfunction...I had nothing to do with it.

So how did it go? Did you enjoy the range compared to Cordova?
I liked the place as compared to Cordova.
Only myself, Lowball, Oaf, and sublime1 showed up. We had a blast. I think I burned through 400 rounds and ended up having to clean 3 guns (9mm, .40, .45). :)
Whew! I just got back from digging a hole.
A large hole.
A three-body hole.;)
Obviously, after looking at my target, it's safe to say that I couldn't hit the broad side of a large barn.

I brought out my Remington 700 PSS in .223 caliber.
Left the AK in the trunk.
Next time, I'll have some rounds loaded up for the M1A & Remington 700 Varmiter
sublime1 03-01-2005, 06:11 PM I brought my Mauser 98 .308 and had a blast. I wanted to fire Oaf's .223 but he packed up and left before I had a chance to ask. I shot Oaf's .45, Lowball's 9mm ,and Egan's .40 . Thanks, guys.

Yeah I shot Oaf's .223 and it made me want to go and get one! Sniper central. That thing was sweet!
Glad the guys made it out and maybe next time more of the others will show up.
I think the one off on South Sunrise would be closer for everyone but the drive out to the other one was pretty fun.
