Hartland man accused of driving 145 mph on I-94

Caledonia - A 25-year-old Waukesha County man tore into the new year - at 80 mph over the speed limit - and wracked up a possible $1,230 in traffic tickets, the Racine County Sheriff's Department said Monday.

Timothy M. Knick of Hartland was pulled over while driving a turbo-charged Subaru WRX on northbound I-94 near Highway K for driving 145 mph in a 65 mph zone, Sgt. Brian Londre said Monday. That ticket was for $863, and another for reckless driving added $367, for a total of $1,230, Londre said.

The new year was barely five hours old at that point.

There was no evidence that Knick had been drinking.

"That's a good thing," Londre said.

Tickets have been issued to many people for exceeding 120 mph, Londre said, but he hadn't heard of anyone reaching 145.

Court records show Knick was found guilty of speeding in Milwaukee County in 1999 and twice in Waukesha County in 1997. His record at the state Department of Motor Vehicles, which clears citations after five years, is clean.

Knick will have an opportunity to contest the new tickets in Racine County Circuit Court. He could not be reached for comment.

If he could prove that the WRX is not capable of reaching 145mph (I forget what the speed limiter is set to), he could get off on a technicality.

yeah, I though it was limited at 140, but who knows for sure, speedometers are questionable at that speed.

Couple things about this case.

1. I wonder what method was used to detect his speed. I thinking that the officer didn't Pace him lol. I am thinking that the officers training in "spotting speed" would not be too useful at 145mph.

2. Radar is not very accurate (lidar is more accurate). I am pretty sure the faster you go the more innaccurate it is.

3. I would fight it by mail LOL. Trial by declaration.*

4. If he was moddified he could get past the cars speed limiter which I believe is 140 and it is drag limited (stock) at like 145mph from what I have read. So if he had a reflash that rid him of his speed limiter with minimal mods he could reach 145.

I agree, I would get some evidence that the car is not "capable" of such speeds, which would prove the detection method bogus (except the car I am sure is impounded so it would be hard for him to reflash to stock if it is modified). Basically I am trying to say I think there are holes for this guy to exploit. If the guy is not in jail maybe he will post it up!

*That was a joke.

As opposed to the "non turbo-charged" WRX? lol. The news makes it sound like it is some rare exotic (love'n it). Or I guess maybe they were informing all the people who have never seen a copy of Car and Driver.
