View Full Version : How long do Silverstar bulbs last?
thebankman 01-03-2005, 01:49 PM In cold weather plus snow I had a Silverstar headlamp bulb burn out. Only the low-beam filament busted, the high-beam was still working. This bulb lasted a little over 22000 miles. Is this normal for these light bulbs or should it have lasted longer? Would water/snow/cold kill the bulb?
Zoeb2s 01-03-2005, 01:56 PM I just burnt out a headlight bulb on my other car after ~ 28K miles...sounds about right, guess it depends on night usage..I dont have day time running lights on the other car, but the subaru does so that might effect the life of them as well.
nic3krnnamja83 01-03-2005, 01:59 PM i've used mine over 30k and took them out i asume they still work and will continue to work

get HID's
psoper 01-03-2005, 03:00 PM For what it's worth, I'm on my 3rd set of bulbs at 138,000 miles, so losing one between 20-30,000 miles isn't too terribly shocking.
eastbaysubaru 01-03-2005, 03:14 PM I'd also recommend the Xtravision bulbs over the Silverstars. The silverstars have a blue tint which impedes their performance. They may look "nicer", but the performance isn't as good as the Xtravisions FWIW.

stevedood 01-03-2005, 03:21 PM These light bulbs suck a$$.
I tried them in my fog lights and one burnt out after a few 100 miles.
They are a complete waste of money
gooder77 01-03-2005, 03:21 PM nearly 30k on mine...no daytime running lights though
thebankman 01-03-2005, 07:41 PM I put in the stock bulb when the Silverstar burned out, will look into Xtravision when I've got time. Do they sell em at Kragen type stores? ANd yes the Silverstars don't make it any easier to see over stock bulbs.
eastbaysubaru 01-03-2005, 09:38 PM Yup, the Xtravision's are usually right next to the Silverstars, and they're also cheaper. I just put a set in on the recommendation of a trusted, extremely knowledgable source on the LegacyCentral.org bbs and it's an amazing improvement over the super old OEM bulbs in my Legacy.

Sounds like you touched one. I clean all my bulbs with isopropyl alcohol before installing them.
Heavy Dan 01-04-2005, 02:09 PM i've had my stock bulbs on for 52k (DRL) without burning out. I turned off the DRL and have driven for 23k more. still working...

mattsn0w 01-04-2005, 02:47 PM 9 months, 26K miles, stock 04 WRX, lights are working fine but now I want something brighter.
In my girlfriends old 93 Nissan sentra I had 2 sets get burnt out after just over a year.
The cheapo ones I got on ebay have been in my old civic that I gave to my brother for over 2 years now? ;x

I did the same and installed with latex gloves. I think the Silverstars are more susceptible to inrush current failure and the putting them in the WRX headlights was a bad match, they worked for awhile and then died mysteriously. I already wrote about this before....

Impala SS AutoX 01-04-2005, 03:19 PM If you want the "good" Silverstars, seek out the Osram Silverstars that are sold in Europe. You can get them thru importers in the US.
Despite the "same" name, they are NOT the same bulbs as the US-spec Sylvania Silverstars (Sylvania and Osram are the same company). The US Spec ones get the light color from putting blue dye in the bulb glass. The Euro ones use clear glass, and get the color from using different gas in the bulb.

Beware of blanket statements. My set of Silverstars is as bright as ever, almost 2 years now -- and I have my DRLs turned on.
