View Full Version : post uppipe downpipe install - sounds
whiterabbit 11-24-2002, 01:13 AM Installed uppipe and downpipe this past weekend.
I get this noise when I get into boost. Can't really tell where its coming from. Sort of high pitched. I thought it was turbo whine at first but its kinda loud. If i rev up the car while not in gear (neutral or just with clutch in) it is perfectly fine, no sound just normal exhaust note.
Is this a symptom of an upipe leak? I am praying that it isnt.
thanks
Obi-Wan 11-24-2002, 02:08 AM I would think that if it was an up-pipe leak you would hear it when reving the engine in neutral.
V6turboTA 11-24-2002, 02:10 AM Yup. also does it get any better or worse when the car warms up?

Pimpreza 11-24-2002, 02:42 AM yes
Impreziv 11-24-2002, 08:38 AM That sounds like something is not secured, check all the fittings and see if your leaking from somwhere.
Good Luck,
Pete
nqwan 11-24-2002, 09:12 AM can you compare the loudness to anything? i think its just the turbo spooling.
Impreziv 11-24-2002, 11:13 AM You may be hearing the wastegate open, or these could just be typical noises from freeing up more air with the bigger DP.
My WRX starting making new noises when I changed things, I doubt you have very much to worry about.
Pete
whiterabbit 11-24-2002, 01:32 PM yea I thought if it was an uppipe leak I would hear it in neutral. It doesnt get worse or better when the car gets warm either.
Just as soon as the car starts boosting it will start. Kind of like a screech sound.
I'm goin to check the factory EGT today and hopefully get under the car tomm to take a look.
Is it possible to have a leak cause I tighted everything too much?
Thanks
IgotWRXed 11-24-2002, 02:28 PM i was aboot to say egt. i remember posts like this over on NAZIOC and it turned out to be the egt probes fault. also, when you are in neutral/clutch in, there is no boost being generated, so it could be turbo related if u only hear it whilst in boost.
Impreziv 11-24-2002, 04:31 PM Are you having any kind of blue or white smoke coming from the exhaust? Also, when the car is on do you see any of that smoke escaping from the back of the turbo? Both of these were problems I was having when I blew my turbo.

My only suggestion is to check and recheck everything. If possible, have someone else check it too, sometimes when you look at the same thing for a long time you miss whats right infront of you.
Good luck, keep us posted.

RoadRageR 11-25-2002, 07:28 AM I would almost guarantee you have an UP-Pipe leak. My car did the exact same thing. I bought a godspeed uppipe from someone that had not perfect flanges. It makes a screaming noise when you get on it. You just need to get some thicker gaskets. Mine was the up-pipe to manifold mating. It sounded kinda cool though, like a big screaming turbo or something.
whiterabbit 11-25-2002, 09:09 AM did u just get thicker gaskets and it went away?
NORSE 11-25-2002, 09:11 AM It is not "definatly" an uppipe leak. After doing just the DP install I could have sworn I had a leak. But it was just the normal sounds of the engine amplified through the DP. Just take it to someone who knows and see what they say. No reason to jump to conclusions.

RoadRageR 11-25-2002, 09:37 AM Yeah, there was a vendor selling thicker up-pipe gaskets. I can't remember who, because it was months ago, but it was a Subaru dealorship, selling in Vendor Classifieds, for like 20 bucks. It fixed the screamin demon.
Cmaj7 11-25-2002, 10:03 PM If you didn't torque anything. It's almost certainly a leak. 26ft/lbs is not a whole lot of torque. You'll be suprised just how little. Did you replace all the gaskets? Gaskets are cheap compared to the PITA of taking the whole thing apart again.
Loosten off all the nuts and bolts, then retorque them.
If you didn't download the directions from vishnu tuning, then do so. Shiv gives a very specific order for tightening and torquing that has worked perfectly for the three uppipes that I have done.
Finally, how loud is this sound. With a SS uppipe you should hear a raspy whine when the turbo starts to spool. This is completely normaly. It's one of the many great reasons to replace the oem up-pipe...in fact when you finally go with a Turbo Back this sound becomes much more pronounced.
whiterabbit 11-25-2002, 11:34 PM well i redid everything
the ssshhhhhh sound definately is different now. I torqed everything to 26lbs. the sshhh sound doesnt appear until after about .7 bar or so. So i'm suspecting it is normal sound now. I'm much happier. Hoping to get someone to ride in my car that knows what its supposed to sound like.
Thanks for the help
I followed Shiv's instructiions this time around compared to perrin's last time.
