In the upcoming issue of Motor Trend yjey have a very brief article in there goes as such: SPIED! SUBARU LEGACY STI
Encouraged by the success among enthusiasts of the WRX here. Subaru is preparing a hot version of its next-generation Legacy for import to North America. Tuned by its AMG-like subsidiary, Subaru Techica International, the Legacy STI, dubbed s401 in Japan, features a twin-turbo flat six putting out 350 horsepower to all four wheels. Expect the car in the '04 or '05 model year.
That was the full article in the March 2003 Motor Trend.

glad to hear it, but as any true hot rodder will tell you "it needs more power!"
If it takes untill 2005 I think 350 will be somewhat dissapointing due to other recent announcements of projected out-put for other vehicles to be on sale in 2005. Not that I think it won't be a fun car.

Sorry to burst your bubble. But the S401 uses a dual stage turbo and it still used an EJ20 and not an H6. Also the dual stage turbo has like a small turbo and a big turbo, one for low end and one for top end. As for it coming to the US, It should be around here in probably 2007. As far as 350hp goes, That is very unlikely. It is probably more at around 300hp.

Sonic1, dude did you really quote that?
Because like "RS" dude said...
I can't imagine an STi Legacy ever coming to the US; I'd be happy to be proved wrong though. And especially only after a year or less of the Legacy T being introduced. I find that hard to believe.

I wrote an email to SOA asking where I can find more solid information, when it comes out, on an upcoming model like a Legacy STi. Usually, they deny everything, thank you, and that's it. This is what I got instead:
"Thank you for visiting the Subaru Web site and for your interest in Subaru products. There are no plans at this time to offer a Legacy STi in the United States. However, with the other model lines getting more power, it seems as if it would only be a matter of time before the Legacy model line gets more power. When or if this will happen, is not yet determined."
Other model lines. Lines. Plural. Isn't the WRX STi the only model that's getting more power (officially mentioned so far)? :)
Either way, if they're willing to word it that way, I'd say all the spy photos and snippets are right.

First off, the TT is on the way out in favor of what you see on the USDM STI - a 2.5T. Also, Subaru has mentioned no plans to turbo the H6 let alone do a TT setup when a Twin-scroll 2.5L setup would be way more efficent, also not that that car would most likely be an auto as the H6 has yet to be mated to a MT. So a bunch of bogus info there.
The most I would reasonably pull from that would be a new Legacy with a turbo in late '03 as a '04 or a '04 as a'05 which we know for sure that '05 is the legacy's 5 year redesign.
Andersonwrx - What car's do you think the LegacyTurbo is going against to think it's not going to have enough oomph??
ImprezaRSDriver - The S401 makes 350 out of its TT setup.
flat4fantasy - I agree that seeing an STI version over here is a far stretch, methinks there might be STI add-on parts for the LegacyT from the dealership - Like the WRX - but no STI for a long while if at all.

From a very good source, we are getting the turbo Legacy (250hp) this year, and STi Legacy (300+hp) either the following year, or the year after that. The STi Legacy and Forester will debut in the same year.
With Subaru's weight target for the Legacy (3100-lb sedan) it will be as fast as the 4.8-second 0-60 STi, which will weigh about the same, and have the same driveline (buzz is that the 3.0-liter turbo is not going to happen...bummer). Obviously much depends on gearing, but also look for suspension and braking improvements, etc.
I don't know what competitors the STi Legacy will have, but if Subaru reaches its target weight, in terms of pure speed, it will be in M5 territory. It will be faster than the S4, faster than the R-series Volvos, probably as fast as an EVO. Don't forget that the Legacy is the most important car to Subaru. They need a performance flagship for grownups, and the WRX STi ain't it.

the other model line getting more power is the Forester. check the general forum for the details on the new 2.5T forester.
