With Arafat's passing, what are everyone's thoughts on A) what should be done and B) what Bush will do?

I personally think it is an oppurtunity to greatly change the face of Palestinian/Israeli/US relationships. By greatly change I mean it could improve or worsen...I'm interested to read what other people's opinions are in this matter.

ditto... the one word that comes to mind is "concession". that is, both Israel and the Palenstinians need to come to the table and have legit discussions on how to (partially) resolve their funk

At least people can't blame Arafat for everything anymore.

We all knew he'd see peace in the middle east eventually... just not in his lifetime.

But we still have Sharon, and generations of bitterness. Concessions could be twisted to be "giving in to terrorist demands" in the press, right?

I asked a Palestinian colleague what he thought should be done in this power vacuum, and he said that an election would be the best route, but he was not sure if the Israeli Army would allow Palestinians out of their houses to vote.

I sincerely hope that this power vacuum leads to positive things, but the pessimist in me sees a lot of risk for downside...

Sharon scares me some what...we will see what happens. Hopefully things will get better but you never know with that area. Anyone with a better understanding have any ideas?

Even as I am against the establishment of an independent "palestinian" state within sovereign Israel, Arafat usurped all of his P.M.'s authority in negotiating with Israel, doing his "people" a great disservice.

If I were you, I'd start getting comfortable with the idea of a palestinian state. Keeping the antagonism up in the long run means only bad things for Israel.

I never doubted that there is much hate for the guy, he was a real piece of work. He is responsible for lots of terrible things. I was just wondering if anyone had thoughts on what to do going forward, now that he is out of the way...

As long as Sharon is running Israel not much is going to change. IMHO...

He was indeed a Sunni Muslim, and Sufa was a "Palestinian" Greek Orthodox Christian before she converted to Islam, before she married him.

I used to believe peace was possible in the Middle East, but then Rabin was assasinated.

I've never been fond of Sharon, but I will say that I'm absolutely stoked that he's ordering the assassination of terrorist leaders, and I hope the practice continues untill they're all dead.
