View Full Version : What features do you look for in an engine management system? Imprezer 11-23-2002, 11:03 PM What attracts you? Whats important to you? What do you want to aviod and stay away from? - Alex stealth-wrx 11-23-2002, 11:15 PM price attracts me features i like are: high or no rev limit launch control anti-lag ( even though i dont use it) external high power coils small incremental tuning points pc or laptop tuning, no handheld crap lots of memory for data logging no software glitches simple harness ( no such thing ) many many external relays for things like nitrous thats all i can think of now i want to stay away from systems that dont care about the customers and systems that have many problems. i.e. link Goatface 11-23-2002, 11:22 PM all of the adjustibility of the tec 3 is really nice I just wish it was a little more easy to install then i would put my own in... The Goat Andrew Arcanum 11-24-2002, 11:27 AM I'm with Stealth-wrx's choices but would like to add that a "fall back" mode is nice. You know, so when I dork up my settings and the car runs worse that an 82 escort, I can just revert back to stock or a setting that worked /\rcanum ImprezaRSDriver 11-24-2002, 11:37 AM Having an ECU with no software glitches is impossible. Even the stock ECU has software glitches. The only difference is that they are just not as apparent. david2z4 11-24-2002, 12:06 PM Having a Tec3 the problems I see are. -Ease to revert back to stock ECU. (Need to revert back to stock to pass Wa State emissions test) -Easy to read Laptop GUI. -Glitch free software. -Ease of software use. -Fast Technical Support. -Ease of replacement sensors or ability to use stock sensors. Tec should be able to accept stock knock and other sensors. (less the trigger sensor which is far superior) Maybe with a firmware pack. 98mpreziveRS 11-24-2002, 07:46 PM Originally posted by stealth-wrx price attracts me features i like are: anti-lag ( even though i dont use it) ..all standalones can do a form of anti-lag. Very easy, just program it to retard the timing and dump excess fuel once you hit a vacuum condition. the mix of the 2 will create an ALS system for you. very simple explanation but i've done setups like that before with TEC and SDS and it works great, just burns throught turbos and manifolds like a kid eats candy. :D Alfriedesq 11-24-2002, 08:57 PM AVCS control (LINK wake up) stealth-wrx 11-24-2002, 09:14 PM anyone here ever try the sds system. 98mpreziveRS 11-25-2002, 12:22 AM yup i have the EM-4F setup right now actually. couldn't be happier with it for the price. i-speed 11-25-2002, 01:00 AM The new features I am looking for are: 1.) Wide Band O2 2.) multiple Maps to switch between 3.) Anti-lag 4.) Launch Control Guess I am getting into a slightly different realm of tuning. Looking for the best in a race car but at a decent price. Or I coudl just jump up to a Motec or better teiva-boy 11-25-2002, 03:13 AM My top two are 1. Plug and play 2. Wide band 02 input capabilites but I also wouldn't mind... 1. easy to use software and not old DOS apps(Unichip) or terminal emulation crap(UTEC) 2. Good vendor support(thats tough for any company though) stealth-wrx 11-25-2002, 11:04 AM does anyone know what the limit on the factory coils are? christoph1371 11-30-2002, 04:03 PM 1. many zones which ALL are adjustable 2. wideband O2 3. ability to have more than one map running at the same time!! of course one will be the one that is running and the other will be like a ghost. 4. lastly, the ability to tell the user that he/she is a complete moron and to go and have a professional tune their car before they start ragging/*****ing on how ineffective their tuning module is. Chris PSM 12-07-2002, 12:42 PM 1) Good Technical/Tuning Support 2) Wideband Capability From what I've heard, Link is soon releasing the wideband feature for the Link Plus :) teiva-boy 12-08-2002, 03:03 PM an "auto tune" function would be nice, that way I could shoot for stoic at idle or at least a little rich. HiGhWaYcHiLd 01-19-2003, 04:26 PM does SDS work well on 02 wrx ? Jaxx 01-19-2003, 06:04 PM decent resolution (greater than 8x8) ability to use any sensors (gm, stock, whatever) integrated wide band High or low impediance injectors i-speed 01-22-2003, 05:19 PM High or Low impedance is just a resistor for each injector. That is all the Tec and many other units have in it to allow for low impedance injectors. The resistors by the way cost about $5 total, then just connect them into the line and you are all set. So putting them into a Engine Management unit should be pretty simple. On to use them and off to not use them. JoeT 01-22-2003, 10:08 PM I chose Autronic for my engine management because I hate re-tuning for different weather, and different altitudes when driving. Check out this link, pay particular attention to the "Fuel correction and timing correction factors". The more factors, the better the ECU adapts to changes, but the trade-off is, it's slightly more complicated. http://www.emergent.com.au/200sx/ecudata.html Hope this helps. N/A 01-23-2003, 06:00 AM Being able to quickly and easily switch between different maps depending on the weather. For instance one map for the winter time when the air is nice and cold. Then a second map for the hot humid summers. The price is also a big concern. Being able to get quick support if something goes wrong with the unit. a wideband O2 connection ability to read EGTs also datalogging lots of it quick default setting for if I screw up the maps and want to quickly go back to the orignal settings to start over |
