After seeing the TB mod that I was unaware of, I was wondering what other ones I may have missed. So spill it, what are the free or just about free mods out there.

Remove airbox
Port TB
3/16 mod

What else?

Reroute your windsheild wiper sprayer nozzles to spray on your IC.

Weight reduction. There is a whole list of parts you can take off and not loose anything and a list of those that MIGHT kill you. ;) Up to 150 lbs can be removed from your car.

Open exhaust. Loud, but free and ok for the track.

Thats all I can think off.

How does that work, or rather, how is that done? And how would I go about rerouting the windshield sprayer nozzles to the intercooler?
Hehe this is my first turbo car and I (still) haven't had much of a chance to poke around (for fear of the dreaded expired warranty!) :D

Get a MBC for $50, that's free enough.

But the EBC's are soooo much cooler :D j/k yeah MBC's are pretty cost-effective.

Build your own at Home Depot for $4...that's near free.

Buy a sheet of gutter gaurd, paint it black, trim it to size and zip tie it into place behind your hood scoop, great way to stop rocks / debris from dinging up the IC and it costs about $0.80 a sheet.

I know you are probably looking for performance mods...but for cosmetics you can also do the headlight mod, the foglight mod, and paint your stock rims with the new Duplicolor wheel paint that is out.

Shifty

Also, gutting your cats is a free way to go instead of exhaust...

Choku Dori
11-24-2002, 12:10 AM
Eh, gutting your cats is not such a great idea. The air turbulence caused from exhaust gases tumbling in the gutted-out chamber is very bad for performance and durability. It's especially bad on our turbos too, let alone some ricer's Civic. It's like the equivalent of cutting springs to lower your car. Not trying to rain on your parade Shifty, but I felt compelled to say something :D

Oh, and while I'm at it, do not poke holes into your intake manifold no matter what!

Shifty
11-24-2002, 12:12 AM
Not raining on my parade at all....I didn't do it, I purchased an exhaust system...Just a suggestion...

What's that about holes in the intake manifold?

I did the headlight mod. Looks sweet IMHO, all blacked out on a black car. What is the fog light mod you speak of?

Yes, gutted cats are bad. If someone is going to do that (Not telling you to break a federal law) But, take the cat off, bust up the insides of it with a screwdriver or any other type object. Shake out all the juck that comes out. Find a nice exhaust pipe that fits just inside the cat from end to end. Weld it in. Reattach cat.

Ya, the headlights mod looks great...I am going to paint my stock rims with the graphite duplicolor wheel paint, and I used that paint to do my headlight mod with, looks good, more of a gun metal / tinted look to the lens than just straight up flat black.

Foglight mod - Just doing a little rewiring so that the foglights work with just the parking lights and also with the brights on. I can post instructions if you like. Another free mod - pull the DRL module.

I suppose a cheap way to go for some would be just having a local exhaust shop weld in straight pipes in place of the cats...Although I'm sure it's not all that great of a flow either, it would be much cheaper than buying a turbo back...You'd just have to find an exhaust shop that wouldn't mind doing it

Oooh! You sly little devil you! That does indeed take care of the turbulence issue
Oh and Shifty, bet ya didn't know that some crazy Civic/Integ kids punch holes into their intake manifolds to supposedly increase airflow into the engine. Crazy ricers! :D

Thanks, I thought it was a visual mod to the foglights, like painting them or something. I'd pull the DRL module, but quite a few roads out here have signs up telling you to turn your headlights on during the day, so leaving DRL on saves me from a possible ticket :)

One you remove the DRL, no lights will be on normally in your car. Once you do the foglight mod, you can run with your parking lights and your foglights together, your foglights will also stay on when you have your brights turned on as well. As usual, disconnect power before wiring your car, use these instructions at your own risk, I am not responsible for your use of these instructions, blah blah blah, standard disclamer... Enjoy.

Remove the DRL:

In the engine compartment, above the airbox, there is a black box. Twist the two screws on the top of this and remove it.
If you look down under where this cover was, you will see a metal module, with a wire harness plugged into the bottom of it. There is a warning label on the module, saying something to the extend that it is hot.
There are 2 10mm bolts that secure the module to the side of the strut tower, remove them.
Unplug the wire from the module and secure with a zip tie for a clean look.

Foglight Mod:

Remove the under dash below the steering wheel - 3 screws: 1 on the side (where the door closes), 1 on the left front, and 1 on the right front.
Remove the fuse box from it's metal frame - Remove the 1 screw on the top and press in on the metal tabs (one on each side in the middle). Also remove the black relay boxs on the right side by pressing in the tabs.
Splice a 6" piece of wire into the orange wire coming from the back of the fuse box.
Locate the red w/ green stripe wire on the 4th relay down from the top.
Cut this wire and tape the end coming from the dash.
Connect (solder, twist together, wire nuts, etc.) the piece of wire spliced to the orange wire with this new end and tape it up.
Test everything before putting it back together.

i read soem stuff about how if you get HID's your DRL's will still light up even if you have the relay under the hood unplugged and that you have to take out a module under the dash for them not to work...that is...only if you have HID's

The bolts that i am talking about are on the rear sub frame. subaru didn't put them in if you get under the rear of the car and look at the sub frame there are two holes one on each side you can get bolts and bushings to go in the holes. I just went to the hardware store and bougth a bunch of bolts the bushings i made on a lathe. diong this will lock the sub frame to the car.

Besides taking pictures, which size of bolt did you finally used? No lathe at home, does it mean we won't be able to find anything to go into the hole?

What is the benefit for locking the subframe to the car? Just a more solid feel?

How much power is gained by running an open exhaust?
I was thinking just for ****s and giggles about making a downpipe that goes up through the hood and to the right.
Maybe put a flame thrower kit in it and shoot flames by the passanger window.

Impossible to build a $4 MBC from Home Depot... by the time you're done getting all the pieces, it's more like $20

www.dawesdevices.com has a sweet MBC for ~$35

I only saw a mbc that was $45.50 shipped

Ravens blade did a how to for the sub frame lock kit...

http://www.ravensblade-impreza.com/modifications/drivetrain/subframe/subframe.html

you can order the official suby part for about $25 subaruwrxparts.com sells them....

from what I heard it improves handling performace enormously but it makes for a pretty rough ride... something to stick in on race day and take back out for daily driving.

Wideband O2 or nothing at all?

Lets see this thread is talking about cheap mods.

Get me one of the wideband O2's cheap and I'll be all over it.

a cheap gauge is certainly better than no gauge.

BTW Autometer is quality?? Not in my experience!

By TB mod, are you talking about removing the heater lines? If so, consider relocating or isolating the header tank (sits on right intake runners). It heats up the manifold PLENTY.
