View Full Version : Dragstrip tires.. any suggestions?
AWDball 11-23-2002, 07:28 PM Anyone have suggestions on what tires I should use for the strip? I plan on using my stock wheels, and I will only be using the tires on the dragstrip (not on the street).
Just trying to get a better 60 foot time. My best so far is a 1.857 and that it when I ran a 8.713 in the 1/8th mile.

Mach5WRX 11-23-2002, 09:37 PM Use your RE-92's!
AWDball 11-23-2002, 09:49 PM I was thinking along the lines of Slicks. I break my tires loose every time I start of the line and I want to get more traction and get better starts.
Lobster Man 11-23-2002, 10:19 PM Get the lightest wheel possible, and get some Kuhmo Victoracers (not street legal, they are slicks) or Falken Azeinis.
mr2guru 11-23-2002, 10:26 PM Getting a little slip with AWD/turbo is better than bogging with slicks. I doubt slicks would help unless your pushing 320+ whp
Besides better your tires slip than the teeth on your first gear.
I vote for the RE-92s

That's really not a good idea. That's a good way to frag your drivetrain. Just my $.02
:)
Goatface 11-24-2002, 12:45 AM re - 92's they allow slip and a way to measure performance all at the same time.

Arcanum 11-24-2002, 01:38 AM I argee with Mach5WRX, slicks + AWD, not a good idea. There has to be give somewhere when launching. Either in the clutch or tires, anywhere else is going to break stuff. $$$ stuff.

i wasnt happy with my azenis (stock size) at the strip. i got better 60's and et's on re92's.
whatever you chose, lighter = better
Weasel 555 11-24-2002, 04:55 PM Nitto 555 (drag radial) from discount tire direct
V6turboTA 11-24-2002, 04:57 PM You DO NOT want slicks.
People are hooking 1.7's on stock tires. Its all in the launch, not the tires.
If your spinning your tires badly try lowering your launch rpm.

subbie_rs25 11-24-2002, 07:55 PM if you want good drag tires for an all wheel drive car i would either go with some dunlop sport 5000 that will give you grip all the way around or even the falkans but in wet weather not kosher. but look for a tire with good tackieness and a stiff sidewall that wont flex to five you good launches
25RS 2NV 11-24-2002, 08:30 PM dont use kuhmo 711's. I got a 2.5 and I was spinning first and chirped second. and i was launching at like 3800. Was really pissing me off. got a 1.982 60 foot, cant imagine what i woulda got with better traction.

stealth-wrx 11-24-2002, 09:21 PM re 92's suck bad. i had them at 15 psi front and 20 psi rear and i still spun them all the way till red line.
i had some luck with falken azenis, but now those are still to slippery.
if you want some sticky tires. go for the yolkahamo road race tire. it has a 50 treadwear rating. very sticky.
Obi-Wan 11-25-2002, 12:01 PM A friend of mine has a first generation Talon and ran a 12.0x on snow tires.
Unless you have massive power I can't really see the need for slicks with an AWD car. Like so many people have already stated, something will probably break if you run slicks and hook up on a really hard launch.
upgrade your wheels, get some 16" rota slipstreams. really light and they will improve your time. there are all kinds of tires out there that will help you compared to stocks. it seems that erveryone has already given plenty of advice on tires
Akiata 11-25-2002, 11:48 PM You guys all suck. ;)
Nice reaction time on the middle run. :D

Akiata 11-26-2002, 06:24 PM You guys just don't get it. :(
ontada2 12-17-2002, 04:46 AM slicks on a stock tranny, you have got to be kidding? As if WRX trannys didn't already suck, slicks will definitely break it. Now if you had a dog box or at the very least a sti six speed, maybe you could use drag radials, but not slicks!
rednek wrx 12-20-2002, 08:38 PM i agree i have 18 with super sticky y rated tires, i dont like to launch with them on because at 300+ hp and 6k rpm launch and they barely spin, it launches way too hard for my car!! im putting my stock tires and rims back on next time i go racing
tylerderdin4 10-27-2003, 01:37 AM I DID A 1.9 60 FT, 13.74 IN 1/4 MILE AT 98 MPH. SO ROTA SLIPTREAMS ARE GREAT. PLUS ITS ALL BOUT THE LAUNCH. LEARN HOW TO DRIVE THE CAR FIRST ,INSTEAD OF GETTING DIFFERENT TIRES. I HAVE FEDERAL TIRES WHEN I DID THAT TIME.
