View Full Version : Shipping Auto to Outer Islands
mehlt 01-25-2003, 07:11 AM I was on the Big Island last weekend driving around in a rather boring Ford Escort. Outer Island roads have AWD written all over them...
So I did a little research and found that it costs around $200 to ship an auto to the Big Island and back (includes discount for return shipping within 30 days).
Depending on the rental car rates you would probably break even a little over 1 week.
We may go back in June and spend a week so....
The question is:
Do you know of anyone who has shipped their vehicle's to an outer island and if so how did it work out?
Here is a link to the Young Brothers page:

BTW, it's cheaper to ship to Kauai and Maui....
ds baruuuuu 01-26-2003, 11:00 AM thats pretty cheap its about the same price my company gets we ship outter island all the time havnt really had any problems all i can say is check your car really good for damages before and after =)
mehlt 01-26-2003, 06:05 PM A co-worker may ship his SUV over (around $250) and back for a week. The rental price for SUVs is pretty steep and you can't take a normal rental car on Saddle road.
If it goes well for him I may ship my WRX over for a week while we are on vacation there.
The only issue will be getting from the Airport to the pier, but we have friends there who may be able to help on that.
gpatmac 02-12-2003, 07:03 AM Tim,
You rock. Now let me see if I can get my car together and then put a plan together.
Aloha

I'd like to take a trip to the big island dragway! :D
Nolimit 02-12-2003, 02:10 PM hey, if we plan far enough out, ... maybe we can take a group trip over there!! :D
Mach5WRX 02-12-2003, 02:13 PM I'm down for a group trip!
gpatmac 02-12-2003, 02:42 PM Maybe we could talk them into a further discount.
As a note, I didn't have any plans. I was just curious for future planning, but if we were to put something together I'd go.
mehlt 02-12-2003, 08:02 PM Big Island Cruise? That would be wild! Well if it's in June I may be there. :)
Red RS 02-13-2003, 01:41 AM Just a word of warning. I recently shipped my car here and matson is currently on a 3 week backup.

This does not apply to west coast shipping. We're talking inter-island only through Young Brothers. http://www.htbyb.com/
mehlt 02-18-2003, 07:11 AM I priced a rental car for a week and it comes out close to $225 (once you add all the tax, surcharge, etc..), and that's for a lousy economy car.
So I think I'm going to try this. I plan to call YB and make sure there are no hidden costs or other issues. If not I'll book my dates in June.
cendo54 02-18-2003, 11:38 PM that would be a neat trip. the big island has an awesome track. at least the last time i was there. nice launch pad, water box and long run off at the end. time slips given from the tower on the return road. memorial day weekend use to be the big drag event. at least that's how it was a few years ago.

Sweet
mehlt 02-19-2003, 09:25 PM The bad news:
Once you add the insurance and other expenses the round trip cost is closer to $250.
Also, you have to drop the car off the day before the barge goes out and can pick it up the day after the barge comes in.
It's still doable for me, but leaning back to just renting a car.
Will post an update if I still decide to do it.
