Alright since someone started the Intake thread, I figured I might as well go ahead and start an exhaust one.
Weapons of Choice: (In no particular order)
A'pex-i N1 Cat Back - Big canister (coffee can) type of exhaust system, 2.25" Throughout, bolts directly on, piping is advertised to have titanium coating? *could be wrong about that* The muffler is polished, and the fit angles the canister outward towards the left side. I've personally owned it (was stolen), sound isn't too loud, not too soft, pretty burbley, lots of back fire upon downshifting. Gains (?) but there is definitely a noticeable gain up top, no noticeable loss on low end Price ranging anywhere from $440-520
Blitz Nur Spec-R Axle Back - Another big canister, 2.8" piping (originally made and designed for the JDM GC8) Will bolt onto stock piping, as well as some mid-pipes (def fits apex-i N1 midpipe) Piping and muffler is polished, and comes with a JASMA Cert No. Gains *tested on a WRX with the catback system* 13.9 BHP on the wrx, I figure this system with a mid-pipe, would be the highest. Price ranges anywhere from $320-440
GReddy EVO Cat-Back - Yet another Big Canister type of exhaust system. Said to be the most quiet 'big can' system. Piping is 2.25" throughout, bolts directly on, ceramic coated I think. Gains are said to be minimal. Price range is anywhere from $450-520
Tanabe Racing/Hyper Medallion Cat-back - The racing medallion is a big can type of exhaust system that is pretty unique looking, while the hyper is more 'Greddy SP' looking. Piping is 2.25" throughout, bolts on directly. No idea of the gains or sound, if anyone wants to add some to this, gladly do so. Price ranges from $469-520 for both
5Zigen Fireball Cat-back - Big can style with an angled tip. Muffler is polished, piping is 2.25" Sound is similar to the a'pex-i N1, a little more quiet than the N1. I believe this muffler also angles out. No idea on gains. Pricing ranges anywhere from $480-520
HKS Super Dragger Cat-back - Big can style with a 'apexi DUNK' look muffler. Polished muffler, coated piping. 2.25" throughout, bolts directly on, sound no idea, gains no idea. Price ranges from $520-590
Stromung Single/Dual catback/axleback - The weapon of choice to most i-clubbers (mainly because of the dislike of big canister looking exhausts) Gains no idea, sound is very deep and grumbley. muffler is said to be stainless steel, but several complaints of rust and cracking in the build quality have been reported. Muffler is black, while the dual/single tip is polished. Price ranges from $370-420.
There are others, but my hands are tired, so you guys can add and chime in whenever and wherever I missed/mistook some.
Cheers,
Rich

I think Cobb has a dyno chart they say is worth about 8 hp with a Stromung, but I'm not sure who it was.

I want a little more sound, but don't like my car to be loud, so I think that am going with an STi backbox, and a custom midpipe. Some people are also running WRX exhausts on their RS.
Does anyone know if Mike Shields still sells midpipes to put STi backboxes on the RS. I know he used too, but that was a couple years ago.

Also, the GDA body RS's have the same exhuasts as well. I think only one of the hangers are different.

I think that at the least, Mike would get you an STi setup at wholesale from whatever dealer wil give it to him and then sell it to you for less than what the dealer would. But the best way is to just ask him. My experience is that he may take a couple days but he will respond.

Bingo- one hanger is different (it's reversed.), so, yo can either just leave it alone, which will probably be fine if you use good hangers like Kartboy, or you can have a weld hop cut and flip the one changed hanger by 180 degrees and put it where it belongs. Wouldn't cost much.

It's all about the stromung.....all complaints i've heard about cracking on this exhaust have been from people who were cheap and purchased the mild steel version of the exhaust..

Not everyone who got the mild steel was cheap, just impatient. The mild steel was available first, and when the SS came out, there was a long shipping backlog. Some guys just opted for the "right now" satisfaction instead of waiting for the SS. Check up on them at http://www.subarureview.com, tons of useful info there.

I've got D's racing medallion now... love it, he's right about the flat spot between 3and 4k rpm, but feels like subaru Vtec between 4and 6k rpm.
I've heard that the flat spot is caused by a rich run situation, but with a super afc, it can be corrected.

Yah the only complaints on the Stromung rusting was the mild steel ones. I got the stainless-steel one and its still good, but i did get the mild steel mid-pipe, so far i don't think it has rusted (from the bottom view). right when i got it they came out with the stainless steel one :( oh well. I also waited a long time for mine to get to me.
btw i've checked my piping and it was 2.25" ID.
what about mid-pipes on that post? I'd personally just go to a muffler shop and got a custom made one if i did it again

Personally I think exhausts for our NA motor is pretty much what you like looks-wise and soundwise.
Gains will probably be about the same for pretty much all of them, piping size and how restrictive the actual muffler is will determine just how much of a gain you get.
That said, I've got a Blitz NurSpec with 2.25" midpipe and I love it. ;)

Yes, it is pretty loud. However, I've got the first gen Apex'i silencer on it now and its made things very nice inside the cabin. Silencer on = civil sports car sound.
Silencer off = sports car sound.

I have to agree witht the Stromung. It's not too loud, unless you want it to be, and it looks completely stock. I haven't been followed by the police yet, and I used to live in Irvine (home of THE fascist police). I have a mild steel for about 2.5 years, but haven't had to much rusting.....yet.

I have the Scoobysport, I installed it with a strumund non-resonated mid-pipe and it is LOUD. Now it's even louder with the Borla headers....but damn it is the sweetest sounding exhaust set up I've ever heard.

I have the STI backbox with a custom 2.25in midpipe. I tried unsuccessfully to get a SS midpipe from Mike Shields (among others) and finally had a local shop make one. I didn't really notice much of a gain with my intake (PDM) until after I had the cat back installed. It's not much louder than stock just cruising and it sounds nice when you get on it. It's exactly what I was looking for.....................................Doug

What about pipe diameters? Anyone know the diameter of the stock piping? Was it 1.75" or 2"?
What's the best for N/A, mild mods (no cams, no headwork)?
2.25"?
Thanks,

2.25 is all you really need for a catback.

I've heard that before, good size for piping is 2.25" , but I never knew what the factory pipe diameter was (my car wasn't stock when I bought it).
If stock diameter is only 1.75" , then it might be a good idea to try 2" pipe, but if stock is 2", then that's a different story.

3" is way too big for non-turbo, I'll tell you that...

Despite the fact it's a lame ricer fartcan exhaust :D, it will absolutley ZERO effect on your warranty and will even pass smog. ALL cat-back exhausts are smog legal, and street legal as long as they aren't straight pipes or too loud.

I have the Apex'i N1 on my 2000 Impreza L Wagon. I did notice a little low end loss with it(but it is made for a 2.5 and i have a 2.2), but the up top gains made up for it IMHO. It isn't too loud and I love the poppy backfires it makes when I let off the throttle. I can't wait to hear it after chrismas when I can unwrap my Borla Header and Cobb Tuning highflow cat and get them installed.
Another note. Apex'i says that the piping on the N1 is 60mm, which if you do the math is about 2 3/8".

well,
i have 2.2L
stock exh piping was 1.75"
i now have custom mandrel bent 2.25 meinike style... and DTM ebay muffler
it's unresonated,
the performance gains were much more than i had expected
w/ my 4eat, if i'm cruisin at say 25, and the car is in 3rd, and i slam the pedal down... it shifts into 1st and the tires break free for a chirp...
never ever did that b4, not even on wet roads...
so whoever said there's no gains on NA for exhaust is crazy, cause i experienced pretty strong gains,
