I have to say for ~$60 it can't be beat. Took the "thunk" out of the drivetrain. It is relatively easy to intall. As for motor mounts, they increase NVH way more than the tranny mount does alone and didn't make as big a difference as the tranny mount alone did. Not worth the price IMHO. my $.02 lamghstfce 11-23-2002, 07:53 PM do the motor mounts actually do something though? does having the engine move around less actually do anythign for the car? or is it just a totally feeling thing? mr2guru 11-23-2002, 09:19 PM I guess you could say since less movement is transmitted to the tranny and engine that more power is transmitted to the wheels but it would hardly be noticable in acceleration test or dynos. It's a feel thing. Car just feels a little more solid during shifts. stealth-wrx 11-23-2002, 10:00 PM i say go for it. if its only $50-60 bucks. go for it. small price to pay for what you get. personally i made solid engine mounts. but then again i drag race my car and trailor it. Imprezer 11-23-2002, 10:23 PM Neither of the mounts really do anything in terms of performance, I think. The only benefit is the "feel" of the car. While tranny mount really does elimite the "thump", the engine mounts really do not do anything besides making the car feel rough and shake at idle. Of course, stock mounts are more prone to tearing and I think that is why there are those Group N mounts. After all, who would want their engine flop around on torn mounts during a rally. ;) At some point I had some motorsports only CUSCO mounts and the whole car felt rough. I got used it it, but anyone who would drive my car, would complain about them since so much noise and fibration would be transferred through them. Now I have the STi tranny and engine mounts and I am going to take the engine mounrs out to make my car more civil. ;) - Alex lamghstfce 11-23-2002, 11:22 PM i heard the engine mounts can be a hassle to install, any ideas on how long the whole thing would take? stealth-wrx 11-23-2002, 11:27 PM 10 min with a rack and tranny lifter. Shifty 11-24-2002, 12:15 AM Tranny mount is great! Goatface 11-24-2002, 01:30 AM ill get mine on order aswe speak.....Woooo haaaa here we come stiffness GOATS ASS N/A 11-24-2002, 04:30 AM Rather then get the motor mounts which transfer all of the vibration from the motor to the rest of the car. You could leave the stock ones in and order that small shock setup for the motor to eliminate any torque lost to the motor rocking on its mounts. Personally I'd skip it completely and just go with the transmission mounts. lamghstfce 11-24-2002, 11:34 AM but a lot of people say that stiffening up one and not the other can cause stress to the joint where they connect. i'd rather just do the tranny mounts alone, but then again, i don't want to take that risk. What would the install time and PITA factor be with jack stands on the floor of normal garage? /\rcanum lamghstfce 11-24-2002, 01:56 PM Originally posted by Arcanum What would the install time and PITA factor be with jack stands on the floor of normal garage? /\rcanum yeah, i'm wondering that too. V6turboTA 11-24-2002, 04:21 PM I would do the tranny mount and hold off on the motor mounts unless you have some serious power. I love the tranny mount in my car. worth the money and the 10 minutes to install. Deffinatly increases noise inside the car tho. ~v6 N/A 11-25-2002, 04:45 AM You can jack up the front of your car, put it on jack stands and then use a regular hydraulic floor jack to support near the back of the transmission while you change out the transmission mounts. Changing the mounts is fairly straight forward to do. If you've got the car on a lift then you could just have somebody support it while you change out the mounts. When changing a clutch using a lift I usually just have somebody push the back end upwards while I put the bracket back on. ej25 11-25-2002, 12:29 PM the Sti engine mounts transfer torque more quickly than the stock mounts (because they don't compress). That makes them worth it. They are a pain in the ass to install, but are worth it. Tats 11-26-2002, 08:17 AM Installing the tranny mount is real quick and easy...the motor mounts are the *****. As if the passenger side one wasn't bad enough the drivers side is MUCH worse. Apperantly the steering box makes it tough to get to the bolts so we had to unbolt that and move it a but to get to them. Well worth it though. Tats. STiNightFall 11-26-2002, 02:11 PM damn subaru, they should have the stronger tranny and engine mounts in there in the first place big sky 11-29-2002, 09:57 PM A very worthwhile upgrade in my opinion. The first time I got to try the upgrade at an autox the differnce was very apparent, daily driving not much difference (I haven't experienced the increase in NVH). What I have experienced is more "hooked up" feeling when pushing the rex hard and I like it. The engine mount install is a bit of a pain, I had trouble getting the bolts to line up- my helper finally got moving the floor jack side to side, which helped. I also didn't remove/disconnect the pitch rod- that may have helped also. A great mod- next rear diff mount. big sky nqwan 12-01-2002, 06:56 AM Originally posted by big sky The engine mount install is a bit of a pain, I had trouble getting the bolts to line up- my helper finally got moving the floor jack side to side, which helped. Chalk that one up to experience (they did eventually get lined up, but not w/o lots of cursing, sweat, toil). All I know is that there was a signficant change when I did the swap out. I actually had to do it out of necessity. My left engine mount was so dead that you could squeeze it with your fingers. When you turned the engine over you could see the block jumping around in the bay. With the swap completed the engine was rock solid and you could feel more of the engine through the shifter. Nice add-on IMO. PhreeZe 01-23-2003, 10:28 PM Is there a difference from the STi Tranny Mount and the Group N Mount? If so which is better? Group N starts with a D101... STi starts with an A020...? |
