I spent the last two days doing research on the motor I got to mess around with.
The engine is EJ207DW4ER-026
The heads are LHS20V and RHS20V
The ECU is AH970
BUT...
No red intake pipe.
VF30 turbo.
STi optional oil temp/pressure adapter under the oil filter
Based on the ECU, it is a V7 STi RA Spec C
Based on the engine code, it is V7 STi RA Spec C, limited, or S202
But why VF30?
And it cannot be S202, since there is no red intake pipe
And, why is there STi oil temp/press adapter (of course, it could have been added after, but some STi came with it, so it could be a clue)
In terms of the heads, I am confused.
What do you guys know about it?

Oh yeah, I promise you all I will get to the bottom of this and will make a complete run down on all this mumbo jumbo.

RA Spec C Limited Alex. :)
Maybe it will make more power than your Axis motor, muwahahaha

Yeah, I saw that.
According to that it is S202 engine. But then again, where is the red pipe? Why is VF30 there?
Hehe, this motor is not to replace the Axis monster motor. I decided to get rid of TEC III and in order to run OEM/STi ECU again, I have to re-wire the car (again) as I have removed my COMPLETE car harness from the car. And, after that, I am sure I will need to do some troubleshooting. And, I dont want to troubleshoot on the 10k motor. ;)
After the car is re-wired, I will use the JDM motor for a while. Plus, I gotta get the Axis motor o-ringed. Then, I will use the AXIS and use the JDM one in my Legacy.

Hmm, based on my turbo then, it could be regular STi, STi Limited.
Cannot be true.

Ok, the 006/008 = RA Spec C, but yes, the intake manifold/turbo is VERY confusing...

Ok, did some more research and with huge help from Yohei (gogogo) I found out the following.
First some background info on GDB STi's in Japan.
The GDB's went through A ~ E type. A being the first one when it was introduced as MY01.
GDB A-revision, they had the following STi's:
STi -- EJ207DW3CR (VF30)
STi Type RA -- EJ207DW3CJ (Same as regular STi, no AC, no power options, etc, VF30)
As you can see, the only difference is the last letter. And, I know that the engines were the same, besides the Type RA not having the AC there. So, my conclusion is that R= AC, J=NO AC.
GDB B-revision, they had the following STi's:
STi -- EJ207DW4CR
STi Prodrive Style -- EJ207DW4CR (Same as regular STi + added options)
STi Type RA Spec C -- EJ207DW4EJ (VF34, Spec C motor)
STi Limited -- EJ207WD4ER (same as STi Type RA Spec C + AC, power windows, VF30)
S202 -- EJ207DW4ER (Same as STi Type RA Spec C + Red intake hoses, special ECU, oil cooler, exhaust, VF34)
GDB C-revision, they had the following STi's:
STi
STi Spec C (No longer called Type RA Spec C)
STi Limited
GDB D-revision, they had the following STi's:
STi
STi Spec C
STi V-Limited (Same as Limited, but in the year when Subaru wins WRC, Limited becomes V-Limited)
GDB E-revision, they had the following STi's:
STi
STi Spec C
WR Limited
I am still working on the C~E revisions and will post this info soon. I did ID my motor by now, hehe.
My EJ207DW4ER is MY02 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Limited engine. Which is basically Type RA Spec C motor w/ AC. ;) It is not a S202 like I was hoping, but it does not matter. The only difference would be the ECU, Red Intake pipe and VF34 instead of VF30 I got. The long block is identical. Weee-haaa!

Excellent! I figured the long block was the bestest, but the turbo + paint job isnt ;)

sounds like you have a very interesting motor.........did it actually come assembled like you received it?.........on the actual block, on the back side where the transmission usually meets the block on top, there should be a serial number of some sort....does it start with a "T", "R", etc.......also, did those heads come with that engine....."LHS20V and RHS20V"...usually SPEC C's come with "RHC" letters on the right head......also that ECU "AH970" is a Limited ECU with 320hp. the "AG970" is SPEC C......" AG971" is suppose to be the s202 sport ECU......
just some more info from my vault of useless info....:)

Yep. It came like that.
As I found out, the head markings don't really have anything to do with it. Some are RHC and LHC, some are LHS20V and RHS20V. Some are mix and match. ;)
I will look up the serial # tommorow. Why? What will that tell you?
Yeah, my AH970 is STi Limited.
STi Limited is basically a Spec C with AC and some other "power" options like windows and mirrors. And, it comes with VF30, so my motor is STi Limited for sure. Which is still a Spec C motor. Since it is going to be retuned anyways, I don't care if it is S202 or not. ;) Engine is the same.

Hey Alex, what injectors do you plan to use with the EcuTek flash and the monster motor you have from Axis?

While this post is old, I have some more recent data:
i have a sti version 3 motor (japan spec) and the serial # is 205675, it has a IHI VF24 turbo the red manifold ect. all ready to drop into my 98 RS. All I need is a wiring diagram, and I'd like to make sense of this serial number, all the posts I've read say that number should be longer and have some letters in it as well.
any thoughts?

From the serial number, I think you actually have a EJ205 from a ver 5 or 6 STi. I need to get ahold of some of these wiring diagrams, as it seems people have been needing them a lot lately.

yeah, these importer people have no idea what theyre selling, but didn't the v5 or v6 have coil packs? mines got the regular top mounted coil. are there any really big differences between the v3 - v6 as far as internals go
Toiletbrush
03-10-2006, 10:11 PM
The version 3 motor is the EJ20K. The main differences between that motor and the one in the ver6 is the intake manifold and throttle body assembly. I think most of the internals are identical. From the version 3 on, the top mounted coil was used, whereas the coil packs were used on the WRX-A to the version2 STi (EJ20G). I am so glad they changed that.
