View Full Version : Bright Lights in the Rear for Tailgaters..
Zoeb2s 01-14-2003, 01:56 PM Is there a way to get some REALLY BRIGHT lights in the rear and hook them up to a switch so that when people are tailgating I can turn them on and blind them for a quick second so they would get off my ass...
I want the lights to be consealed so no one can see i have them...i.e. in the reverse light holes or behind my rear windshield.

Daios 01-14-2003, 05:08 PM you could carry a spotlight, turn back for a sec to shine it back at their face, then continue driving.. or stick a light under your bumper like i see trucks and suvs do hahaha. they might run into you stunned though if you shine a bright light to their face
Daios (Day-ohhss)
NegativeC 01-14-2003, 05:34 PM I don't know how legal that is, could possibly get pulled over for them. You could integrate them into your tail lights possibly with some clear lenses.
Jay02wrx 01-14-2003, 09:06 PM I was thinking the same thing. I have 4 h7 bulbs in housings and was trying to figure out a way to do that..
InfamousDX 01-14-2003, 11:52 PM they sell the license plate kits where there are like 4-10 REALLY BRIGHT lights (i dunno if they're fogs or what size they are) that just point towards the driver behind and blind them.
Zoeb2s 01-15-2003, 11:07 AM i want to have it so no one knows its there though..as for the legality..Im pretty sure its illegal...but so is front tinted windows, no front lisense plate, modified exhaust, and blastin 3 12's at 4:00 in the morning in a residential area ;) ...Im not to concerning with the law..I just want to kno if its possible...w/o them being seen...also if i put really bright lights in the reverse light housing will it melt it from the heat??

a few cars ive seen have motorized license plates that flip down with a switch and then there are around 9 or so very bright halogen lights, i fyou wanna get really into it you could think about doing this, itll prbably run you a couple grand but it looks amazing, i dont know what id do if soemone did that to me on the road lol, denfitly NOT legal to be flashin those things on public roads :)
Zoeb2s 01-15-2003, 03:10 PM haha..if i had a couple of grand to spend on my car it sure as hel would not be on some lights...although that would be cool to have though..

bjteel 01-20-2003, 12:13 PM Why not just spray your windshield with a mist. If they are close enough, they will get wet too. Plus, no one gets hurt.
Look into making an oil-slick machine out of the trunk mount STi intercooler spray bottle...haha
Br1t1shguy 01-20-2003, 05:37 PM I saw a guy that had red led's lining the bottom of his rear window, with a banner over it. So when he pressed the button they lit up and it said "GET OF MY ASS!". The LED's were bright enough so that it was easily seen in the day.

That's just what I was saying. The flip kits so they're behind your license plate and no one will ever know till you flip the switch so the plate flips down to reveal the lights.

haha I like that idea also..
Bagin,DVS 01-20-2003, 07:35 PM About 2 weeks ago I was in a store looking at these fog lights that i thought about mounting on the rear deck, inside the car, facing them straight back for the same reason. they were hella 1000 about 6" in diameter. If you really want to do it, it would not be hard just follow the wiring diagram on a cheap pair of lights from like auto zone. but you would have to make some kind of housing around them to block out the acces light, so it does not reflect back off the window. because you do not want to lose sight off the ******* as he/she skids out of control into a ditch, you want to be able to remmeber that moment for every so you can laugh your ass off.
Zoeb2s 01-21-2003, 10:50 AM LoL...I am not trying to blind them so bad that they cannot see where they are going..I just want a quick flash to they know what they are doing...I think you took this post the wrong way..I am not trying to kill or hurt anyone in the process, I just want them to back up a little..

95imp22 01-21-2003, 07:26 PM You could try somthing under the spoiler if you've got one. If anyone asks, you could always say its for backing up on really dark nights in the middle of nowhere
Peaty 01-21-2003, 08:23 PM Why not just set your back up lamps to get power w/ a switch? And put some of these in there:

Way back when I was in HS I had a 68 Fairlane 500 Ragtop that the back up light switch went bad. I put in a toggle and when someone would come up behind me w/ the brights on I'd flick the switch :) Or for fun at a stop light I'd switch it on so people thought I was in reverse when I took off...
kilyung 01-22-2003, 10:08 AM friend of mine mounted one of those scrolling led message boards on the back of his truck. cracks me up everytime he types/"screams" at someone to backoff. probably not legal but it's dark when unlit.

I like that Idea...it maintains the factory looks also...haha that would be great in a heavy RWD car...flick that switch, then floor it in drive (buring out for a couple of seconds) in the mean while the person behind u thinks ohh **** once that guy makes traction he is gonna plow right into me...
Rapid_Roo 01-22-2003, 10:25 AM Ever notice certain MB's, BMW and Audi's that have one really bright tail light (red) that is really annoying. Its their anti-tailgaiter light. I always thought it was broken until one of my friends mentioned that there's a switch for it.
although, I like the idea of using the reverse lights with a brighter bulb. I wonder if there is anyone resourceful out there that could figure it out and pass it along to those of us that are a little less technical.
TIA :D

You're just kidding right? That obnoxiously bright red light is the rear fog light required in all European cars. If you've ever driven on the expressways in Europe, you'd be VERY grateful for those bright red lights in the fog. Otherwise, you'd see HUGE pileups. Appears most American drivers don't understand how distracting those lights can be when there is no fog. I tend to drive with highbeams on for those people. One annoyance deserves another.
Hope I didn't just take the bait... :)

I've retrofitted a rear fog lamp in my RS. I only use it at the right times though. Yesterday I saw a Range Rover during the day w/ the rear fog on. It just pisses me off the people are that stupid.
I agree about using the high beams but the thing is they are so clueless they have no idea why you have them on. It makes me feel better though :)

can you see the fog lamp when its off or do u kinda have to look for it??
Peaty 01-22-2003, 12:13 PM I have the install on our website (scoobymods). No you can't see it at all. I've sacrificed the drivers side back up lamp for the rear fog lamp. I got the idea from the Scoobynet board. Apparently this is somehting that is done across the pond sometimes.

I guess I should have phrased that as "what they 'called' their anti-tailgating light.
For me, I was thinking of replacing a pair (one on each side) of rear tail lights with those new PIAA LEDS replacement. I just don't know how bright they are and/or if they will melt the lens housing.
Peaty 01-22-2003, 02:27 PM I've put in upgraded bulbs in the rear cluster. Just a little more candlepower, not overpowering but definatly brighter. The metal is nickle plated too. Nice upgrade, my wife had to take the car to work and I watched it drive away. They look good.
Some info on them here:

03impreza2.5rs 01-23-2003, 09:59 PM use to have an 85 camaro---i hooked up the reverse lights to a push switch.i could hold the button in or flash teh reverse lights fast.man did that scare a lot of people and it sure got them off my ass.also get a pair of super bright reverse lights, you'll be set
Bagin,DVS 01-24-2003, 08:54 PM hey there is another thing you can do, i caught my old man doing this, get yourself some of those manilla folders, and you can write messages on them to, it is very low tech but it is a real treat to see someones face when they cut you off, or worse are in front of you doing like the speedd limit or ten miles under it you write your message backwards and lay it up on the dash, they make the best facial expressions. but it is only good during the day.
after they move over you have to pull up next to them and have another sign handy and show them that one, smile and drive away laughing.
This way you can at least not put them into a ditch.
