View Full Version : instrument cluster lighting change
Rogeryung 01-14-2003, 11:23 AM Can I change the color of my instrument cluster (2002 OBS) from green to another color, such as the color used in the current model VWs? I'm not sure it's blue or violet. How hard would that be?
Thanks for any help
Roger
Daios 01-14-2003, 05:14 PM you can just buy a simple "reverse indiglo guage face" that installs over your stock guage (not sure if they have one that goes with a MY02 non wrx since the tach might be different) another way which I saw other people doing it was buying LEDs and resistors then replacing the tiny bulbs in the guage cluster to blue LEDs. I saw the thread on how to do it in the other club before.. (it was a couple months back)

Hyper 01-15-2003, 01:05 AM don't go with indiglos, you will kill your vision
true, there is a way to swap lights, I haven't done that on GDA but I assume its's similar to older Subarus, so here's what you can do
1.dissasemble cluster
2.DO NOT REMOVE NEEDLES (just in case ;))
3.take out wires (just remember where what goes)
4.unscrew two different housings (or you will have them all same....don't know) and take out the bulb - if the bulb is in condom read the rest, if not you have green film integrated into dash so forget about this mod
here comes the option
a.get bulbs condoms (will not have very bright colour)
b.prepare to spend 60 bux on new LEDs
c.get some cheap LEDs any colour you like....another outcome:
-if you are lucky you will find 12v LEDs
-if not get some Super Bright LEDs and get resistors for them, hard way....veeery hard (took me an hour to mod one bulb with resistor)
either way you'll have to mod LEDs to make them fit into housing...just cut the legs, insert them so every leg touches it's pole
that's basicaly it....oh, about the green film....it s00ks :( GC8s and I believe some Subarus that are relatively new have it
feel free to ask any questions ;)
Zoeb2s 01-15-2003, 11:10 AM you say not to get indiglo's...but you can get indiglos...just get the right kind...there are reverse indiglos and regular indiglos...the reverse will give him the same effect...actually it will be a little brighter...I have them on my car actually and they look pretty nice.
Roger..I dont know where u are located..but if you are in the bay area u are most welcome to take a look at my setup..

Rogeryung 01-15-2003, 11:33 AM thanks for the replies. I actually live on the east coast. Thanks though.

Rogeryung 01-15-2003, 11:42 AM thanks. I read somewhere that somebody painted the light bulbs with some kind of special paint. Would this work? This seems like the cheapest and easiest way.
I thought about the reverse indiglo but I couldn't find any specifically for the 2002 OBS. Since I have an A/T, there is a gear indicator section on the instrument cluster. The gauge inserts that I've seen don't have that.
InfamousDX 01-15-2003, 02:54 PM i did the LED swap on my old civic, changed everything to blue, even the clock. it looked real nice but it wasn't easy. had to do it the hard way with resistors and everything. god what a pain...
Hyper 01-15-2003, 04:04 PM yes, you can paint the bulbs....cheap way indeed, but is it worth?...moreover you'd have to find some high quality water based paint that is heat resistant....oh, it won't be bright as well (I tried that way as well)
IS300 02-23-2003, 02:32 PM i just put mine in. it was a b@tch. I didnt know i had to glow or tape the gauge onto the stock on. I realized that when the needle was sticking at 80 and wouldnt go down. lol. so finally i tapped it. But the hard part is wiring them. Where do they wire to. I have a red and a black wire and a switch to mount. I am going to mount them right underneath the fuse box under the steering wheel. But how do i wire? Please help. No instruction was sent from http://www.procarparts.com. Dont go there. They have horrible service and slow shippment.
steeo 02-24-2003, 12:28 PM When i put these in my car i wired the red wire to 1 of the + wires going to the side lights and the black to a ground point.
The gauges i got had only 1 colour but it had a dimmer switch on it and i mounted it under the dash
IS300 02-24-2003, 07:49 PM i have a 2003 WRX. will this matter? So i just wire the red to the side marker and the black wire to the ground?
steeo 02-25-2003, 12:39 PM Thats the way I wired my gauges and they worked perfectly so I can't see why it will not work in your car
IS300 02-26-2003, 06:53 PM heres the link that shows you hot to do them. But remember, what they forgot to tell us is that you have to some how tape the aftermarket gague to the stock one. I used double sided tape. Other people told me to use rubber cement. But i think double sided tape did the trick. It is really annoying to see your gauge stick at 80mph when you are only doing like 25mph.
IS300 02-26-2003, 06:54 PM oops forgot the link ;-) http://www.redlinezone.com/install/installgauges.htm
gospelvin 02-26-2003, 07:13 PM Does anyone have the reverse indiglo gauges? Are they black faced during the day and then that kick-ass blue during the night? I want the stock look then BAM!! kick ass blue.
Stevo
steeo 02-27-2003, 01:23 PM The ones i had in my last car were white faced indiglo gauges and as you said they were kick-ass blue @ night time
loudsubbie02 02-28-2003, 12:37 PM I am getting a after market deck that is silver with blue buttons. So I want to change my gauges to blue. Havent ever seen the indigos or reverse indigos but this sounds the way to go. Anybody have any pics of either of these, or about how much they cost?
Thanks
IS300 02-28-2003, 11:42 PM i will post pics tommorow. it looks real nice. I think it was $35 on ebay and like $8 for shipping.
loudsubbie02 03-02-2003, 08:48 PM Anybody have pics or places where you can buy indiglos. Also anybody know of gauges for A pillar or dash mount that are blue?
Thanks
proDMD 03-02-2003, 09:38 PM autometer colbolt series have balck face with blue backlite
loudsubbie02 03-02-2003, 10:53 PM Pro-thanks, those might be an option.
Anybody know of white face gauges with a blue back light?
Thanks
jriggs 03-04-2003, 07:23 AM which gauges are the best to buy, there are a lot of them out there. which ones can be seen the best, which ones suck????
PDXScooby 03-05-2003, 11:23 PM Just a really basic question--where can you get the condoms for the dash cluster lights? I''ve been looking to change the whole dash lighting scheme to red, but I can't find appropriate light stuff.
southnacnt 03-07-2003, 05:48 PM Me and and a friend installed the indiglow gauge faces on my wrx. the only hard part is wiring the wires for the gauges to glow. Getting the gauges put in is easy. I did not have to put any tape behind the gauges. Mine stay put pretty nicely. anywho The reverse indiglow gauges doo look nice. I am thinking of switching mine to the reverse gauges or order some custom gauges. I ran across a web site that was selling some cool looking custom gauges. Either way I hope all works out for you. What ever gauges you get will definately dress the car up.
gospelvin 03-08-2003, 03:15 AM Where are these custom gauges? Could you post a hyperlink, or a company name? Maybe they can do a black back and a blue glow...

Pick your colors... pick a logo... email them your own photoshopped logo. Sounds neet-o to me, but it could be all crap. They have lots of install pics too. Didn't see any WRX installs though.
