View Full Version : Exhaust question (catless too loud?)
tikwood 04-13-2004, 03:43 PM I am planning to get a HKS Hi Power Catback, Invidia Downpipe (catless), and an HKS up pipe (catless). Does anyone know what decibel level this may be? I live in So Cal and I dont want an exhaust that is too loud. Does anyone see any possible problems with this set up? Thanks for the info.
Running catless will make you loud no matter what exhaust you have. Do a search in the technical forums. I remember hearing some sound samples in there.
my2003wrx 04-13-2004, 04:09 PM If you run catless, it will be over the decibel limit.

Choku Dori 04-13-2004, 04:27 PM Very loud and very stinky. No no for us Californicators!
Also, try posting these sorts of questions in the Tech section. :D
BoxerRumble 04-13-2004, 11:33 PM yeah, it will be too loud, and cops will be staring at you / pulling you over, its too bad the racing scene in california is so bad we have to worry about the law when modding cars..in japan and hong knog, im sure they dont have this problem...but eventually..maybe not in the near future, i think police wont be as strict.
Daredevil 04-13-2004, 11:36 PM i noticed only a very minimal sound difference when i went catless....

esracer 04-14-2004, 08:59 AM plain and simple it's loud, and you will be bothered deffinetly by cops out in cali.

Just a word, if you go catless it'll stick too. Sometimes it stinks like hell. Especially when it's cold.

itll stick? have you been using that 3in exhaust for something else? ;)
yeah it does smell really badly. when i was in tahoe and warming up my car, a little girl walks by and tells her mum that car stinks.
:D
Hush it. Borla Hush it! It's not too loud.

Actually Mike, po-po in HK are even more strict than they are here when it comes to modified cars ;) Every night in the news someone either totals their car or has it impounded by the cops
And in Japan, it's not the cops that do exhaust sound-level enforcement, it's the yakuza (Japanese mafia)!!!!!!!!!!!!
methodical 04-15-2004, 05:06 PM what about running a txs turbo back without swapping out the uppipe? how would that compare to going completely catless?
NewShockerGuy 04-15-2004, 09:50 PM I have the TXS TBE with RFL muffler and it is ALL catless... it will be installed in about 3 weeks... I also have the crucial racing uppipe... same as above. I'll let ya know how loud it is... I like that nice boxer engine sound... sounds very mean and will eat up small children!

blingbling 04-16-2004, 04:38 PM I was riding around in my friends 03 with Cobb Stg 2, headers with uppipe, a Godspeed down pipe and Greddy Evo. I didn't think it was that loud at all. Louder then stock of course, but no where near as annoying as my old neon with a header, no cat and muffler.
He said that he used to have a Thermal Exhaust, but that was way loud, so he got the Evo.
bad neighbor 04-16-2004, 07:17 PM I have both the helix up and down pipe with a borla hush out back. It is not very loud at idle, but when you're getting on the freeway everyone will notice it. BTW: I passed a CHP car on a freeway on ramp and he could have cared less, so maybe its not as loud as I thought.
Choku Dori 04-17-2004, 01:26 PM If you're such a bad neighbor, you should be running a Blitz Nur-Spec instead of the Borla Hush ;) :D

LOL. thoes Nur-Specs have to be the loudest! as far as going catless goes, it will be louder but also it will smell a whole lot more. if you want to be stealth sitck w/ a borla hush or similar.
