I sold mine after getting a ticket using it, but from memory I will try to tell you.

First make sure the switch is on HP then hold unit in your hand and push in the switch and hold it. With the switch pushed in you will be able to lean unit foward or backwards and the numbers will go up or down on the meter. Lean the meter forward untill you get the weight of you car on the meter, lean back if you go to far. I set mine at 3200 for my WRX Wagon. Let go of the button when your weight is reached. Now you are ready to test for HP, it wont to Torque. Stick on windshield make sure your car is level and meter reads 0, press switch again, when it says go you go. You should top out 3rd grear at wide open throttle, on a smooth level stretch of road. If you feel safe enough to try 4th gear a little go for it. When you are done your wheel HP will be on the meter, give or take a few HP.

I am telling you this from memory, so it might not be 100% right. Make sure when you put in your weight that you account for every thing in car including yourself. Weight stated on car or owners manual is dry weight, with no gas or people.

Not to bring back bad memories or anything, but I'm just curious what the cop thought about it. Did he see it? Seems like every time I use my Gtech I find myself thinking "How do I explain this if I get pulled over". Seriously, like "It's o.k. officer, I was just accelerating rapidly and speeding on purpose."

I had ripped it off windshield, but he still saw it. I told him what it was and what I was doing. I got a ticket for 100mph and a $530 fine. I sold it 2 days later on eBay.

so how accurate is it? I am considering buying the gtech pro but for $250 it had better be pretty darn accurate.

hey there. there are 2 types of gtech the pro and the comp. i really dont know if they are accurate but they give you an idea of what you can do. the one that your going to buy for about 250 isn't the pro, its the pro/comp or something like that. there is actually a forum that somebody is sell the one you want for about 220 or 240 i dont remember. but its a cool gadget to have.

It's pretty accurate, all things considered. In my Fiero, it was always giving me faster times than my car was capable of (0-60 in 7.8s in a v6 auto fiero is optimistic!) but for the most part it's reasonable. I think some of the error comes from this - the gtech (at least the old school one, don't know about the new one) uses an accelerometer to figure out what your speed is. But, if your car "tips" backward, you get an exaggerated acceleration due to gravity, hence a faster time than actual.

This said, I'm very pleased with my gtech pro, and the new gtech pro competition looks like a REALLY cool toy. If you're just looking for times, though, I would pick up a used gtech pro for around $100 used, maybe cheaper cause I haven't looked at prices for a while.

As a side note:

Slowest car tested with my gtech - '84 Pontiac 6000 2.5L 4cyl.

0-60 in 15 seconds!!!!

I used it right before I went to the track one day. One run with the G-tech, and several at track with best shown below.

G-tech: 13.69@101.1
Track: 13.71@ 99.9

Tesla's customer service is excellent. Just yesterday I emailed them asking for a replacement bracket (mine is broken). Today I got an email saying that they'd send one to me at no cost. Pretty cool, if you ask me.
