Is the car stock or do you have any aftermarket exhaust or flywheel?

It's most likely plugs or wires (fwiw, stock wires are only like $26. I personally think that's better than messing with a DItY kit). Flywheels can also cause a misfire CEL, but on my car it comes up as cylinder 4. Ymmv, of course.

BAN SUVS,

Couldn't an aftermarket header also cause the CEL code? I was thinking more in line with this as he noted that unless he gave the car a lengthy time to warm up the CEL kicks in. Borlas have been known to cause CELs due to their inability to pre-heat the Catalyst (especially an aftermarket Cat) and cause a false CEL stating an engine misfire. any thoughts?

I had my Borlas for about 11 months before I got my flywheel installed, and I only got the P0420 code from them, never a misfire.

Hmmm... maybe, his headers may react differently? Of course this is all armchair moot discussions until he can state whether he has any mods or not on his exhaust or drivetrain.

True. But I'll bet you a dozen scoobysnacks that plugs or wires fixes the problem.

If he has mods to his exhaust..like headers or aftermarket cat, I'll take you up on that!

Okay, but to be fair- exhaust mods will generally only cause a cat inefficiency CEL, not misfires.

True 'nuff, true 'nuff. But faulty wires or a bad plug should also eat into his MPG and possibly cause rough idling. No such mention of it. Still no telling really whats going on until he replies.. and before we completely hijack his thread on this tangent!

Maybe the Magnacors, probably the flywheel. Learn something every day.

So did I lose?

Well, first lets have him replace the plugs and the wires as he said they had a good run and the car was bought used. If that doesn't work, he should try to find out what sort of flywheel he has. (Actually he should find out what kind it is anyways as it may lead to other issues if it is near it's useful life). Still, I am banking on the Borlas as giving him the problems due mostly by his description of having to warm up the car before the light goes out. But nevertheless, I do agree the plugs and wires are the cheapest and probably the place to start.

Ooops, did not see the "12.4 lb Primative Flywheel" in the mods list. Hmm, not familar with that particular flywheel, weight doesn't seem too bad, not like a Fidanza.
