Are there any places that sell racing gear like helmets, shoes, driving suits. I have a helmet for autox but I would like to pick up a pair of shoes. I could mailorder but I prefer to try my shoes on. My roomate is also looking for harnesses for his track prepped 1976 BMW 2002.

He can get all the stuff you are looking for, but as for trying on, unless you are the same size as some of our race drivers (who I would assume would let you try stuff on) you are kinda out of luck on that. We build and maintain race cars, and have many race cars on hand, and many more to come.
