What I am really interested in is to know how the new IHI VF35 compares to its older brothers VF22 and VF34. Thankyou

I won't consider VF35 new and VF34 old.
As far as I know, VF35 is used in Australian market and Japanese market use(d) VF34.

I don't have info but maybe VF35 is smaller than VF34

The VF35 is smaller than the VF34 and the VF22 I think is the biggest of all VF series turbos.

The VF35 is a very fast spooling turbo that suffers somewhat on the top end. It is an ideal turbo for rally cars equipped with restrictor plates, or even for auto-x cars.

The VF22 is the "largest" IHI turbo, meaning it is quite laggy but develops a lot of top end power.

The VF34 is basically a VF30 but has a roller bearing design. The VF34 also performs well at high RPMs, but is more streetable than the VF22.

That's a negative on the VF35 being used in the Australian market. All new generation (MY01/02 for us) WRXs had the VF30 with the current MY02 STi running with a VF34. I believe you'll only find VF35s in special RA versions as they are usually used for motorsport purposes only.

As for the original question-

VF22 - Ball bearing design, big top end power, boost from 3500rpm. Known to be fairly fragile.

VF30 - Good for mid range power and moderate top end. Non roller bearing design. Same exhaust turbine as VF22 but has smaller compressor housing.

VF34 - Same spec to VF30 but in roller bearing design so it spools up earlier. My VF turbo of choice but also the most expensive.

VF35- Smaller turbo then VF34, designed for less lag and more bottom end.

Strange. In Singapore, it is totally different as we get the MY02 Euro STis instead of JDMs. They are running VF35s instead.
Compared to some grey imports Prodrive STis which are running VF34s, the VF34s is definitely less laggy and perkier!

Personally, I will go for a VF22 or a 34

So, since I'm an ocasional street racer and goto Drag strip may be once every two months, my best bet will be VF34! Thanks to you all for your input. As for the price, I wrote to http://www.altasports.net/subaru/turbo/turbochargers.htm and they said they will have the VF34 very soon in stock for about $900+. We will see...

Are the VF turbos the best for the wrx or is there a better one. i know it depends on how and what u want your car to drive like but just wondering?
