I am going to start atocrossing my wrx, and wanted to know whats the best tires are it and where I can get some.

Well for starters it would help to know what class you're going to be in. Any mods?

How many events are you planning on doing?

Do you want to change tires or have them double as street tires too?

Yes the car has mods on it, cold air intake, and turbo back. I'm am also putting a new fuel system, new ecu, boost col., and some other little parts. I think I want tires just for autox, unless they aren't going to make that much of a difference, but I think they will. With the mods on my car I believe I'm in street Prepared.

Well if the ECU modifies boost then you're in SM.

If this is your 1st year autoxing, then look into the Falken Azenis while you learn how to drive your car, read the course, and just learn how to look ahead.

For 500 you can get 2 sets of 205/55/16 Falkens, or 1 set of Kumho Victoracers, which, along with another set of wheels will put you out of your budget. At least the Falkens offer a decent amt of grip and still are street legal.

I found a set of Hoosier R3S03, been used for one autocross, for a good price. 5 R3S03 (one brand new) and 3 A3S03 (showing wear) for about $300. What do you think of them for autocrossing. And I am putting a Boost controller on my car anyways so I'm in SM I guess. Can I use the R3S03 in that class or do I have to use street tires also?

If you are going to race in SM you can't use the Hoosiers. Street Mod needs street tires ware rating 140 or higher. If the "street" in SM is the same as "street" in STX

Don't even waste your money with Hoosiers, they are sticky as hell but they ware the quickest and next year you will just have to buy another set.

I wouldn't even bother getting new rubber unless you still are rolling on RE92s. Get some decent street tires that you will not have to get another set of rims for. Like Kumho 712s, Yoko AVS or Parada, or some Dunlops. The Azenis suck as a street tire they are really bad in bad weather and you don't live in the Sun Belt. This is the cheapest way to go and keep your RE92s for snow.

Save your money and go to driving schools and enter as many AutoXs you can then next year get the cool rubber. PCA, and BMW club have track days with instructors and they cost about 1-2 hundy so save your money they are worth it. You will be faster in the long run.

ThankS the re92s are just about gone anyways so I have to buy new all season tires anyways. Is there a lot of autocrosses out by you? I am moving out there in Sep. for about 7 months. Would 225/50/16 Nitto Drag Radials be good for autocrossing, an do they meet the class rules?

It allows all Street Prepared rules, which includes the use of R-Compounds, like the Hoosiers.

And speaking of the Hoosiers, I would stay away from the R3S03's... those are a road race compound, not the A3S03 which is the auto-x compound. The A's don't need a lap or two to get some heat into them, like the R's need. The A's heat up much quicker. So yeah, pass on them. Also, Hoosiers will last about 1/2 as long as a set of Kumhos. If you have the $$ for a year, go for it. But if you want one set that'll last all season (about 8 events) go with the kumhos for R-Compound.

Don't run the Drag Radials.... they have a soft sidewall. Not good at all.

OK so street in street mod SM is not the same as street in street extreme STX. That makes sense. I run D stock so pardon my ignorance.

Some good street tires will do ok for your first year I have Sumitomo HTR+ on now and they autoX pretty good for allseasons. After my first autoX I ran out and bought VictoRacers and an extra set of rims now I wish I had that money back. It will cost you 5-6 bills for autoX only tires and you have just as much fun on street tires. You will not set the fastest times but you will be competitive and have fun.

When you say moving out there are you saying the Detroit area? If so cool, but by September the seasons almost over. From April to Sept. you can run an autoX every week if you wanted to with different clubs and regions, in the winter you can go to the U.P. and rally/rallyX about once a month.

Drag radials are the worst thing for AutoX, sticky yes but strong sidewalls for turning no.

Toyo Proxes RA-1 would be the best choice for someone starting out AutoX in a WRX. The Toyos are the only race compount tire I can think of that has enough thread (8/32) and drives well on both street and track. The best part is not having to change tires. The falcons are too loud and track terribly on uneven pavement so I would not recommend them. besides, the Toyo's grip more than the Falcons.

I have used both tires on the same car.

do they go by HP too? As far as Stock or SP, they haven't announced it yet. Same with the EVO.

However both will be legal for SM right out of the box.
