View Full Version : Tolerances of 1.8 L tranny with 2.5 RS engine

I currently drive an Impreza 1.8 L '93, FWD. I am considering swapping the 1.8 liter's engine for the 2.5 RS's in a near future. However, I'm not sure whether the stock 1.8 liter's tranny would be able to withstand the new engine's power output or how reliable it can be on the long run.

Is there someone who's done this swap? Is the engine swap as simple as taking out the entire 1.8 liter and install the 2.5 RS's or are there many more things that need to be considered to make the most out of this swap (especially for safety reasons)? We have to keep in mind that more mods will be done after the swap such as CAI, headers, larger exhaust (2.5-3" max).

I have already posted a thread in the "Brakes" forum regarding this issue and how this swap can affect the braking power.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions/comments.

The tranny should be fine since its FWD and will just peel out instead of destroying the tranny like the AWD cars do :p

Kostamojen - Sorry, but my English isn't too good. If I understood correctly, the tranny should hold the power of the 2.5. But what do you mean by peeling out? Do you mean that it will wear out faster eventually to due to the swap?

Peeling out, Smoking the tires, Loosing grip, Waking up the neighbors, Burning rubber, Lay'n some tread, Lighten' um up...

all indicating some sort of wheel spin...
if your car is FWD & not AWD the 2.5L should be ok.

GLwagon - Oh... thank you for the explanation. I think this means that it will be fun! :D
