I don't know much about what mods effect what and what exactly could have gone wrong, but recently my transmission went and my clutch. When I brought it to the dealer to see what was covered they said that I needed a new driveshaft as well and that nothing was covered. I have a TurboXs boost controller, Injen CAI, and a SAFC. Would these really void my warranty? Any help would be appreciated.

Boost controllers are indeed grounds for denying powertrain warranty claims. The intake is grounds for denying engine claims, especially major problems related to detonation. I can't imagine why you would need a new driveshaft though.

what did you have your controlers set to ?

The dealership told me that the driveshaft was stuck in my tail housing shaft and that my car is "heavily modded" so they wouldn't cover anything under warranty.

I'm not a lawyer, but maybe this link can help with warranty concerns. It's alot of legal crap, but what I get out of it is dealerships just can't decide not to cover parts on your car without going through alot of trouble. The law is called the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. http://www.directsaleslaw.com/library/guides/ftc/warranties/undermag.htm

anything that increases horsepower (boost controller) is grounds for denial of warranty on any part of the powertrain. I had no mods except a catback so they denied my transmission warranty due to user abuse. subaru will try any trick in the book to not pay for broken or defective parts under warranty. I am fighting it in small claims court, you could try the same but you do have modifications to your car. they just have to prove in court that those modifications directly affected your broken part (s)

It abso-friggin-lutely will cause them to deny your warranty clain for the clutch and trans.
They were built for 227 HP and one would suspect you make more than that. You probably had that in mind when you paid good money for the boost controller, etc.
If you ran a business that sold things, wouldn't you take pretty much the same position when people brought in your products for repair that had been stressed outside their operating specs?

What if you bought rims and new springs & shocks/coil overs ?

Would these void warranties and what parts?

I'm mainly focused about the Tranny warranty getting voided becuz of my current broken tranny in my accord but then again any major problem is horrible, but most of the time its trannies that are going with these WRX's.

What would void tranny warranties?

Almost any engine mod to increase horsepower or performance can void a warranty..Depending on the vehicle tire, wheel, and or suspension mods can void a warranty..the best way to know what effects your warranty is to contact subaru itself don't ask your service department..Some service depts tend to make theyre own rules..so if you have the info first hand from subaru it would help you greatly if they tell you at the dealer that your vehicles warranty is voided whenm it hasnt beem effected. I also beleive that subaru offers factory performance parts..ask if these also void the warranty and if they dont but your parts do find out why..I wish I could help more but my warrant experience is mostly GM, ford and chrysler..just so you know I own a 1981 Subaru wagon with a 1.8 motor that has a timing chain and a 4 spd trans..My current mileage is 725,452 miles..only major trouble i ever had was with the exhaust studs falling out of the heads which i finally got mad and fixed using 1/2 inch heli coils ..it hasnt fallen off since 1985 when i repllaced them all..I also own a 86 turbo wagon and a 87 1.8 gl wagon..the turbo wagon is for when i decide to go bonzing..and the 87 is used in usac competition with a jammin 3000 watts of power...even though my Firebird Formula goes 204mph..I still LOVE MY SUBARUS....

Warranites are pretty tricky things. When I got my '03 WRX I asked a TON of warranty questions just to see how far I could get it modified without voiding anything. You can't even really get like a new suspension system for it 'cause it would lower your car a bit and the car, and I quote, "...wasn't safety tested at that low of a height..." thus voiding the warranty. Warranty are good but the kinds blow at the same time.

Hopefully you weren't asking these questions to a salesman... :D

Its all up to the dealer. ask around your local area to see if any of the dealers are mod friendly. Some (like Santa Cruz, CA) understand that when their parts fail, its their fault and will still replace them. Of course if your mods specifically cause the failure, thats another story.

I think the tranny is an impossible problem. Even on a completely stock car they can say it was abusive/agressive driving. Any mods can be used as additional evidence that you are a performance nut and must have over-stressed the tranny somehow.

How many WRX drivers have never done an agressive launch or a quicker than normal shift? There you go - warrantly denied for abuse.

Although many subaru dealers just simply cry owner abuse, it doesn't mean its legal. Like any other scam artist or crook, they will throw out some BS like owner abuse or mods void your warranty. They do this because most people don't call their bluff or think its too much trouble to fight the dealer. Its up to the dealer/manufacturer to prove abuse or that a mod resulted in a failure. They have the burden of proof, not the consumer. File a complaint with your state's attorney, take the dealer to court. If people just keep rolling over and letting the dealers get away with this BS, then they will keep doing it and subaru will issue more service bulletins instructing dealers to cite owner abuse instead of troubleshooting the problem.

I went through a tranny claim a few months ago. Basically, I took my 02 in for the clutch shudder fix and they replaced it with a broken clutch. I called the dealer numerous times telling them that the work wasnt done properly, and wound up with a trashed trans 5 days later. They denied the claim based on mods/user abuse. I went directly to SOA to plead my case, but the dealer beat me to it sending pictures of every mod to my car. SOA wouldnt even listen to my story. My lawyer told me that in order to win the case in court, I would have to find a mechanic to take my side in court. Needless to say, no one I knew was willing to go to court for me. So, out over $5,000 for the trans and new clutch assembly, I got screwed. Along with hundreds of other WRX owners that have been screwed by SOA. Basically, if you mod your car, you will have trouble getting a warranty honored. End of story.

if they denied your warranty for mods, they have to prove that those mods directly affected the broken part (in this case, the trans.) SOA either denies warranty work for mods OR abuse. if they dont see any mods on your car (as in my case) they will automatically claim user abuse. My court date is Dec 1st, I served Subaru today. hopefully everything will go smoothly. I'm still trying to find a Subaru mechanic that will vouch for the "defective" transmissions but no luck so far.
