View Full Version : ive got a tranny problem
philioWRXman 12-14-2002, 07:42 PM when rolling, its extremely hard to shift into first.
i know there is the other topic but there is no problem here with going into reverse.
it was taken to the dealer and unfortunately didnt do it. its gonna go back after being warmed up and driven by them again to see what it is, but i wanted to know what you all though and if youve had the problem.
btw, MY02 Subaru Impreza WRX, only mods are front bra and louder horns
gjhsu WRX 12-14-2002, 09:42 PM I think many Subarus have this issue. You just gotta be rolling REALLY slow to get it in first, or you can try to double clutch it in. That usually does the trick for me, but, yeah, I understand your pain. If I'm too lazy to double clutch it, sometimes I just stick it in second and hope it moves :p

It's a stump-pullin' 1st gear, chosen for a quick launch from a standing start, and complements 2nd gear very well, which not coincidentally has 61mph as its maximum speed in that gear, according to the owner's manual.
I double-clutch for about 95% of all downshifting, unless I'm really lugging the motor at a freeway crawl. 1st gear downshift has always been the toughest one, so I am extra careful to match the revs.
Have you tried driving another WRX to see if it has the same difficulty downshifting into 1st gear? How about driving a MY03 model from your dealer's lot? No need to wail on it - just warm up the drivetrain and then try out your 1st gear downshifts.
Why the need to downshift to 1st? I've rarely ever had to use 1st gear for anything other then getting started.
philioWRXman 12-15-2002, 11:46 AM wingless, its only started to do this recently.
thanks for the info though.
what exactly is double clutching? ive heard about it but im not sure.
DetailAddict 12-16-2002, 03:55 PM for me, i have to be rolling at a very low speed and wait for a long time for the synchor to catch up. or do rev match. It's a good thing to prevent drivers downshift into first while going too fast and kill something expensive. :D
DetailAddict 12-18-2002, 09:55 AM in gear
clutch out
neutral
clutch in
rev match
clutch out
in next gear down
clutch in

kenchan 12-18-2002, 11:53 AM yeh with the sudden spool up and everything, if you're rolling forward you might be better off accelerating in 2nd gear. if
you over rev when you engage 1st, you could possibly eat the
teeth.
so, double clutch into 1st, but slip the clutch a tad.
Turbonetic 12-18-2002, 02:05 PM I know exactly what problem you are talking about. I have this issue also but it can be overcome: Revmatch your RPMS first and then try putting it into first while rolling. First will not go in if I am rolling fast unless I revmatch. As soon as you revmatch first will go in no matter how fast you are rolling.
Kevin M 12-18-2002, 10:06 PM Basically, first is very short. If you are going more than 10-15 you will have a heck of a time rev-matching with a smooth engagement. But, who cares? all Subarus have enogh torque to pull off in second as long as you don't come to a complete stop. I love doing that when my Honda Civic-owning friends ride with me- that and going uphill in 5th gear at 35-40 mph and being able to accelerate without downshifting is so nice...
kenchan 12-18-2002, 10:50 PM bansuv- you're gonna damage your motor.

The 5th gear thing would if I did it more often than every 3-4 months, but taking off from ~5mph in second won't hurt anything. I slip a little to avoid revs falling below about 1500. Not a problem in a large displacement motor like an EJ25.
philioWRXman 12-26-2002, 02:04 PM took it to the dealer.
they have to replace 1st and third gears, they were worn so badly.
byoung 12-26-2002, 03:02 PM Phil, Which dealer are you going to? Watch out for GreenValley.

green valley
:(
its almost done though...
youve had problems there too?
and OT, should i call you Bill or Mr. Y**** (bleeped for privacy)
byoung 12-26-2002, 03:10 PM Bill will do.
BTW, You dropped the car off today and they are almost done with replacing the 1st and 3rd gears? They are either not too busy or hella efficient. I thought that was an all day job.
They didn't accuse you of racing the car?
philioWRXman 12-26-2002, 03:22 PM its my dads commute car, so no accusations. it was dropped off several days ago.
apparently they thought it was the synchros. but when one of their techs came back from "subie school" he knew right away what it was and they are replacing it under warranty.
byoung 12-26-2002, 03:39 PM that's one of the happiest ending to a tranny related problem.
BTW, To this day, I can hit 1st gear from about 10mph and under. Don't really get on it hard, mine is a commute car too.
Thread hijacking: Did you go in on one of those dead pedal group buy recently? I just got mine and want to sell it. It is a better unit than the one I have now construction wise. The Lev Ankst version 2 is wider and is the reason I'm keepin it. So neeless to say the newer on is up for grabs 42.00
It replicates in scale the gas pedal and has the raised nubs.
I'll bring it on the 5th to the meet and hope to get rid of it.
Does your dad remember me now?
philioWRXman 12-26-2002, 03:53 PM i told him about you.
he said "oh wow!" not sarcastically like it appears right there in the text, but he thought it was cool.
ill take a look at the pedals at the meet, but i dont know if ill get them or not.
