View Full Version : Low gas mileage in GDA - it's the driver's fault!

My WRX has been getting 16 mpg (mostly city) lately
Crappy mileage!!
I think it is so poor because:

- nearly every downshift I rev-match engine to tranny
rpm. Either double clutch or heel-toe or both, or just throttle blip with clutch in.

- I let the car warm up in idle for at least a couple minutes,
and sometimes let it cool down after a hard drive.

I usually don't push the car too hard (redline only occasionally) so it's not aggressive driving style that's killing my mileage I think.
What do you think?

well, when i am on the highway i get about 28mpg. in the city o get about 21-22mpg.

but i have filled up and calculated it out to about 13mpg. (lets say that it was a lot of driving without dropping below 5k rpm)

I got about 26-27 mixed hw/ct on my best tank. That was steady 65 on the freeway (any higher and highway mileage goes to pot) and lots of <3k rpm short shifts with otherwise regular driving in the city.

Lately I've been driving less, so when I do I punch it a bit more, and my mileage has been about 19-21 mixed.

I get about 280 to a tank. 300 if I am easy!

you know what's funny?
when I had MY01RS 4EAT I used to get 26-28 mpg (92 Oct)
Now I have MY02RS 5SPD I get 18-23 mpg (91 Oct)

But get this! Last time I went to Oregon TSD rally. I filled up (gas light came on) with 92 and drove back with 26-27 mpg.

This is a GOOD thing. Not enough people do this and they don't realize they're doing themselves a disservice. Warming up during idle allows your motor to properly circulate all its neccesary fluids, especially oil.
I can't see how that would affect your mileage. I let my car warm up every day - now, I have a N/A RS, but I still get around 28-30 mpg.

I called subaru about warming up - they said no more than 30 seconds... and that it wasn't really needed and actually might be harmful (just keep it under 3k 'till its warm). Something about the engine staying at the same RPM when its cold.

City driving is all I do on weekdays, and it kills my mileage. But there's nothing like uncorking on the freeways on the weekend :D

Yeah well what people seem to forget is the fact that at low RPMs the oil and water isnt being pumped like it would at higher RPMs resulting in poor oil circulation and really bad water circulation (if you have an air lock in the water good bye engine.

I once got 9 in my WRX, all city, mostly Country roads. I'm glad i get 27 in my RS now!

I read from some site that it's good to let the engine idle for a while on ignition because 90% of engine wear comes from acid etching due to combustion of hydrocarbons from the oil (or something to that degree). I have no idea how idle will keep that from happening, but I've been following the recommended 15 seconds on ignition and I'm glad to see that it's well within the safety margin of 30 seconds :P

Btw, does anyone know why some people rev their engines just as they shut off the ignition? I've been thinking about it and I can't imagine why it would be a good thing.

I get about 18mpg in my RS. I think I drive it a bit too hard sometimes ;)

i commute to school, and its like a good 40 mile drive one way. the first few weeks i drove past 80 mph, but now after awhile im driving so much slower. now its rarely higher than 3k rpms. driving like a granny actually helps mileage.
who would have thunk it?

Try this driving style for one tank of gas and see what you get:

Shift around 3000 rpm, only partial throttle. When you brake..don't downshift..pop it into neutral and just brake with the brakes. If you don't stop all the way and it's time to go just pop it into the correct gear and go.

Try that for a tank of gas (it may be hard to change driving styles, but think of it as a test) and see what you get

I get around 17 mpg if I take it easy. I can't resist doing a few WOT runs onto the freeway.

I get between 155 and 250 miles out of a tank, and it DEFINITLEY is affected by my driving style

Keisatsu

I usually get 220 to 240 a tank, on my way up to seattle I got 301 miles on my tank! :p

Letting your car warm up is a high debated issue. I let mine idle for 2-3 minutes, but who am I?

Driving style, altitude, the weather, octane, dirty air filters, fuel filters, spark plugs, oxygen sensors, and so one can affect your gas mileage. If you aren't getting something similar to the mileage suggested by Subaru then something is wrong, I don't care what anybody says.

wen i had no S-AFC... the most i could get outta my tank would be like 200-220 if i wuz lucky

now that im tuned, the most i got wuz like 300...

just remember... neutral is you best friend

only put it in gear when its necessary, and try to keep outta boost, thats where you save gas... if u have a boost controller, leave it on low boost for cruising & switch to hi boost for merging into traffic or emergencies...

or get an afc

What you seem to forget is:

1.) Oil circulates almost instantly after the engine begins to fire
2.) Theres a thermostat in the engine blocking of flow through the block until the block gets hot, so water isnt flowing through the engine until it warms up anyway dumbass (sorry man, but pull you're head out of you're ass)
3.) Idling = poor combustion = excess carbon produced which dirties up you're cylinders, gets all up in the exhaust valves, and is hell on the turbo.
4.) Idling doesnt create much heat since there is no load on the engine. If you had to wait for the thermostat to open on just idling in the morning you would be waiting for quite some time.

Dont wanna be an ass, but I get pissed when people talk out of theirs.

Instead just dont beat on the car (stay at/below 3500) for the first 3-4 minutes so that the oil can thin out a little and the bearings can all get warmed up.
