View Full Version : SS brake lines
Daios 11-21-2002, 11:09 PM Does anyone here have stainless steel brake lines on their impreza? did you have trouble taking the stock brake lines off?
Mine are "stuck" to the hard lines next to the chassis :( it seems like it might get stripped if taken off and whenever you try to twist it off... the whole line (hard line) would move with it and almost bend. anyone have this problem?

ImprezaRSDriver 11-21-2002, 11:10 PM Well, I know that there is a tool out there that will work and apparently we did not have it when we tried installing them. lolz.
Daios 11-21-2002, 11:13 PM theres a special tool for this?!? now you tell me
how did everyone else go about this?

ImprezaRSDriver 11-21-2002, 11:21 PM The manual says to use a flare nut wrench and becareful not to deform flare nut. I guess I will go and look for one before I go home. That way it will make your life easier. :)
Daios 11-21-2002, 11:26 PM flare nut wrench?!? what does that look like? you think if i get that i can finally do my lines?
$178 to get the dealer to do it is kinda pricey

ImprezaRSDriver 11-21-2002, 11:27 PM Apparently that is what the manual says. I am sure that Kragen or someone will have it. I will look around for one for ya Daios. That way when I get home with it. We can probably do up those lines for ya. Along with the lines on the Legacy.
Daios 11-21-2002, 11:51 PM hmm ok... sounds good...

go go go 11-22-2002, 02:43 AM You should use that special tool to do the lines of clutch and brakes. It shouldn't cost that much and is available in a lot of stores which carry metric tools.
It grabs all 6 corners so that it won't strip. Those brake lines are easy to strip if you use regular wrench. It looks like a regular box-wrench but it has a cut out, much like the wrench for O2 sensor.
good luck

does it look like a box wrench but it looks like it got a small cut? I've seen those before... thought they were broken or purposely cut by someone hehe.. is that a flared nut wrench??

You mean a simple line wrench? Those things cost like $10 max at a parts store. They are just a offset box end wrench with a slot cut into it. Thats all it is. People just like to give things some big name to make it sound like more then it is.

Line wrenches
ImprezaRSDriver 11-22-2002, 10:28 AM Thanks Peaty,
I remember seeing those in my friend's garage. I figured they were just normal wrenches. But I know what to look for now.
Daios 11-22-2002, 03:41 PM hey gary... is that what we are supposed to use? or is that flared nut wrench something else?

RebelINS 11-22-2002, 03:41 PM I stripped two of mine pretty bad, but the old lines came off. I would recommend getting this tool that everyone speaks of. I personally was a little scared, because I got 3 of them of, and the last one was so stripped, it didn't have any sort of geometric shape anymore. So just used the trusty vice grips, and barely managed to get it off, and put the new one on.

ImprezaRSDriver 11-22-2002, 04:22 PM Either one should work because I remember that when Bill and I worked on my car it was similar. It had the shape for the nut.
Peaty 11-22-2002, 05:58 PM Flair nut = line wrench
Peaty 11-22-2002, 06:53 PM Here you go. I did install SS brake lines and started to do the mod page but never did finish. Here is a pic I have though with a line wrench. A lot of the time the top part will spin though so you have to be careful. Sometimes lightly holding it at the top will prevent this from turning.
Daios 11-22-2002, 07:21 PM ahhh thanks peaty

ImprezaRSDriver 11-22-2002, 10:34 PM Hey look at those nice "StopTech" lines. ;)
Good information. I will try it tonight.
Thanks
Kevin M 03-14-2005, 04:55 PM Holy old thread! FWIW, when I did my stainless lines, I managed to strip the line nut despite the fact that I had the proper tool. Frankly, I'd skip it next time and go straight to a small or needle-nose pair of locking pliers.
I dropped in the lines and it works great. Thank you so much for the instruction. I must say, the flair nut wrench+WD40 help. Those lines nuts can strip pretty easy.
Yes, this is an old post, but good post.
Cheers,
