Hey all, recently got an STi and I am pretty sure my clutch is on its way out. I want to get it replaced but don't want to get screwed. Does anyone know of a good shop or person in town for working on subarus?

is your clutch slipping or just engaging late? Mine didn't engage until what I considered to be too late as I released the clutch, so I thought is was shot. I had it replaced, come to find out the clutch plate itself was only worn to 70%, but the pressure plate had some issues. Point is, wait for it to start slipping before you get it replaced. Just my $.02

If you are in 5th or 6th and go WOT, it starts slippin all over the place, revving up high, but going nowhere. I think it is toast, or well on its way.

Just contacted the dealer and they quoted $1050 for parts/labor to replace the clutch! wow. Anybody got some Vasoline?

Yeah i saw the post there for that lollipop place. Unfortunately, by the 21st i will have fully transformed into a raving lunatic. I am studying for the bar exam which begins on the 24th.

After the 27th though, i am down for whatever. I live in Olde Town Clovis, and do most of my shopping over at herndon and fowler, and in just that little area i have seen some nice subys around.

Chris, I talked to Phonna (fumbucker), and he told me that he doesn't want anyone using the motor for anything. I tried vouching for you but he's just dead set on not letting anyone use that motor for whatever reason.

damn thats sucky.....i hopefully will be building mine in the next week or two but still havent been able to get it registered...and i dont want to put it in until i can...i guess ill try to piece my other ej20 back together and hopefully can get it to go long enough to get smogged. I was gonna borrow asian chris's motor but the rod bearing gone and that motor was toast. guess ill keep looking. thanks for trying.

stock motor. But I'm getting 257 heads and internals.

awww....i have a 257 crank and rods and cams and springs and retainers. i was gonna build a stroker for my other car maybe...but i dunno...got too many things

Well, I am not happy about this, but I am really gonna be needing that vasoline now. My clutch decided that today was "the day" and is totally gone. Its getting repaired at Herwaldt right now. I will post the final payment receipt so that i may be flamed into oblivion. Kinda got you by the balls though when your pushing the car.

Ouch.

The good news is that i can resume driving the car in a manner in which it was designed: fast! (well for another 6 months or so til i have to buy another clutch)

It took me six months to kill this one, but it probably is the stock one, and has been abused since day one. I got the car at 47k or so and its at 53k now....how long do they normally last?

definately more than 6 months or 6k. so did the car have a new clutch when you got it?

i highly doubt it, it most likely was the original one, and i was the lucky winner. Regrettably, i have no idea of the history of my car. I am having the shop save my parts so i can check later on tomorrow probably when i get it back.

yeah man.... sorry this was definitely not "the plan", I figured i could make it a few more days, but no dice. I still am going to pay you a visit if i get the car back by saturday, I have many other things this car needs to have done to it.

Well I got it back today. New clutch and flywheel, with installation. Grand total: $1395.44

It feels kinda weird, cuz my old one required you to really mash in the pedal and it engaged when it was just about released all the way. it was really tough too, My left leg was on some incredible hulk status from pushing that thing in.

When i left i stalled the damn thing because now it engages when you let the clutch out an inch and when you barely push the clutch in it goes to the floor immediately. Is this way it is supposed to be?!!?
