i want to get a wrx, my parents are willing to buy it for me, i was...THIS close to getting one tonight, but guess what. You can't drive without insurance right? so we called our insurance agent and we did a over the phone quote for how my insurance would be. AWD, turbo, WRX = 2500 for 6 months....so i was like damn...that's 5,000 a year...i relay the price to my dad while she holds on the phone, i come back only to find out it's not 2,500 per 6 months....it's 2500 per THREE MONTHS....that's a grand total of 10,000 A YEAR...which is ALMOST HALF THE PRICE OF THE FREAKING CAR.This is AAA in california, and i'm only 18 years old. Does anyone have anyt suggestions on how i might be able to get my insurance costs down? I live in the bay area, clean record, good student (above 3.0) and is in desperate need of a WRX...:(

that sounds like a rediculous amount for insurence, i have a friend who was in 2 major accidents, drives an M3, and is 17 and he only pays 5000 per year....maybe try shopping around for a different insurence carrier, the only thing i can imagine that would affect your cost so much is the location, cause ihave a 3.0+ GPA, clean record, and im only paying a 700 a year....then again, i dont drive a WRX.

i think it might be the area too, i live in the bay area of cali, and there are ricers out here 24/7. Those 'fixed' up civics with just an exhaust and some 15 inch rims and maybe lowered with tint. Those 16 year olds drive so crazy, we always have accidnets in front of my dad's store. crazy kids, making it worst for everyone

ya it must be your location or your race.... cause i know both of those play a huge roll, also income.... thats sounds about right, 2700, i think mine will be cheaper but only because of my location...oh well, hopefully itll all work out for you.

ugh dont insure it in your name. insure it under your father's name, and list yourself as a part time driver. i thought everyone knew this kind of thing?
im also 18. we insured my WRX under my fathers name and under our family's group rate. it costed maybe 100 more per 6 months than insuring my old 99 durango did.

My Dad used to work for an insurance company, and he's explained some of the 'why' in their rates.
The short story is:
They're betting that an 18 year old person (usually an unmarried male) driving a turbo-charged sports car will destroy it in 2 years or less. Charging you 1/2 the cost of the car each year is their way of making sure that they lose little or nothing if/when the car is wrecked beyond recognition.
So, to avoid paying for the car twice ( the dealer and the insurance company) for the car, follow Enigma's advice. When I was 18 that's what I did to keep from paying an arm and a leg for insurance.

definitely register it under your dads name. that what i did with mine...i got 2500 or 3000 for 6 months thats the 2 lowest i found. but when it went under my dads name...it ended up being like 900 a year. definitely the way to go! that was over a year ago though...and the insurance companies didn't even know what the hell a wrx was, so it could have easily gone up since then. ESPECIALLY since the wrx is one of the most crashed cars. it rare to find a w with more than 30k on it. but go with the parental unit thing. after you turn 21 with no tickets a lot of insurance companies will transfer your parents rates directly to you. so be good, if its possible in a wrx. ALSO GIVE IT SUFFICIENT BREAK IN MILEAGE!!!!!!! ITS A MUST!!!!! ATLEAST 1000...2000 would be best!!! BREAK IN MILEAGE IS ESSENTIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

okay, we are insured (my parents) have AAA insurance, and they have a policy where i cannot be under the same policy as my parents since i do not have a 3 year drivers experience. Are all the other companies like that too? that's the only reason i'm getting charged 10,000 a year, because i cannot be registered under my parents policy, and therefore i will have to be the primary driver, on the wrx, (turbocharged sports sedan). Can i just go with another compnay for the wrx, and have my parents register as the primary driver while i'm the secondary, and pay for that premium and i drive it 24/7? i need help guys, parents are willing to buy the car, i just need to find a way around insurance right now. BTW i need full coverage, because parents think i'm still young for just liablity and plus it's a new car. Thanks

i think you can have them insure the car with a different company, but im not an insurance agent and can only speak from my own personal experience.
do your parents have an umbrella policy? if so, that will cause major problems because insuring the car under another company will not keep it included under the old umbrella.
if u dont have an umbrella policy i think you should be okay if u insure it under your fathers name with a diff company.

My experience with insurance... consider the following:
.I live in the Bay area where all the ricers are at.
-In a family plan, provided by insurance company called Mercury.
-I am 18.
-Mom drives an '03 Dodge Van
-Dad drives an '02 Celica GT-S 6 speed, and full body performance kit.
-I drive an '03 WRX Sedan.
-No tickets, 1 minor accident in an MK1 where I was backed into.
In conclusion, a little less than $3000 per 6 months.
I am under my dad's name, but my dad drives an '02 Celica. So even if I switch under a different car, my insurance still beats up on me.
So I'm stuck with that, and I think Triple AAA, like most people, is too expensive.

Wow. I have AAA and i'm only paying like 1600 a YEAR (full coverage) for my Impreza... Then again its not a WRX nor is it a new car, but I am only 23 and live in Cali... 10,000 a year is just insane for anything next to a exotic luxury brand car.

I had them for years, got the WRX and my policy jumped to $1,500 a year (36 , no tickets, no points and good driver discount!)and let's not forget $900.00 ayear for the wife's Xterra with NO payments and a clean driving record!!!When junior got his liscence , they wanted $2,500 just for him every 6 months as a secondary driver!
Shop around , I found Mercury will give me the same coverage for 1k for my wife and I plus 1k a year for the kid (he'll be getting a Honda soon so we can drop that even more).Tell dad to check around , even though AAA is "confidence" type insurance carrier the coverage is what counts not the premium!Lot's of folks swear about on-line shopping but do the face to face stuff with reputable brokers for this, it will open your eyes.
But keep that AAA membership , it pays for itself when you have to do any DMV work and you can just go to their office and not wait hours at the actual DMV!
AAA's insurance nuances are built specificaly for the mature crowd and that is no joke, they want no and they mean NO high risk autos or policy holders.

i knwo geiko enables a son to insure a car under the fathers name and allows the son to drive as a part time driver ( orwhatever you want to call the policy) and i have farmers and i am paying 700 a year! and im only 17! and im insured under my name! so maybe try them.....then again, my car is no where near a WRX's power or crash prone reputation.

hi i totally feel your pain... See a few years ago the laws changed on insurance. Since everyone MUST have insurance, insurance companies cannot really drop you anymore. Instead, they offer u rediculous rates. A couple years back I tried to use Farmers Insurance, so instead of telling me no, they quoted me $1200 per MONTH. So I took my business elsewhere, called around to many places & chose a place called Armor Insurance in West Covina (so-cal) im paying about $350/mo on my '02 wrx wagon. This is about the same amt i previously paid on my '01 jetta 1.8T.
In case your wondering... I'm 22, have about 3pts on record, recently had a suspended liscense, ok no more talkin for me.

1) Try 21st Century Insurance.
2) Think about driving a beater for a few years.
P.S. AAA can suck a fart out of my ass! I was rear ended in a 3 month old car by a driver who had AAA. It was a black and white case. I was stopped, the driver of the truck reached for his coffee and hit me doing ~50mph. Their adjuster said that all the damage to my car was not a result of the accident. All I wanted was my car fixed, but they tried to dick me around. As it turns out, I was seriously injured. All I wanted was my new car back, but they would not pay. I sued them and what would have cost AAA 5 grand probably wound up costing them 400 grand a few years later when you take into account my settlement and the fact that they had a team of lawyers working on my case. THAT is why the rates are so damn high.

WRX insurance IS expensive. When I got a '03 WRX sedan my insurance went up $400 dollars to $1200 a year. I'm 52 years old. No accidents, no tickets, and I had to use the highest deductable for a quote that cheap! Also, with the use of VIN numbers, you won't slip your REX by as a 4 door sedan with a 2 liter engine. I tried. IMO there is no magic remedy. Progressive, with very high deductables is probably your best bet. Sincerely, Collins

You're right, please accept My appoligies. I do have some good advice for the lad though.
If You want to make You're Dad proud, don't ask for a WRX. Some things just have to wait. My advice is to take full advantage of You're blessings, and get a more reasonable ride that You can afford. I too am working toward the goal of owning a WRX, maby even an STI, but for now I just have to settle for My 2.5 RS, which by the way, is still an awsome ride that turns peoples heads. try 21st centurty... you should really just do liability. and dont crash ur car. buy the autolock and the lo jack system and an alarm system. that will be wayyyy cheaper than full coverage. also ur autolock, alarm system. and lo jack system. itll be virtually impossible to lose your car. full coverage on a race car for an 18 year old. by the way the WRX is a race car. even though its a sedan. its still a race car.. and full coverage for a youngster is always expensive.. unless your rich.. i recoommmend u do just liability and drive safe. dont plan on crashing ur WRX.

The law requires just disability, but you'd be INSANE to drive without collision and uninsured motorist. You can be the best driver in the land; somebody will nail your car while you're sitting at a stop light. And guess what? If you're lucky enough to live in So. Calif., like me, they won't be insured! Lojack is good enough, but a pro wiil have your car on a trailer and " parted out" in Barstow before you can call any tracking service. I know this reply is pretty depressing; but ther's only one thing worse than not having a Suby. It's not having a car, but still having all the payments. Sincerely, Collins

They are screwed if they have no insurance? You can sue them? You must live a LONG way from CAlif. and be very young. Every dirt bag who drives a beater carries only the minimum for liability. [the law]. And thats if they HAVE insurance. They hit you, total your car, and you sue them for what? Half of the apt. they rent with a friend. If they have no insurance, You'll have to sue them for their assets. [ 100% of 0 = 0]. Get insurance if you are serious about protecting your Suby and your savings. Sincerely, Collins

I am an Insurance Agent and I can tell you there is nothing affecting your 'rate' more then your age. Think about the risk... an 18 year old male in a sports car. You had might as well be driving a Mustang GT convertible :P
Insurance the past few years has been bad and the insurance companies have been losing a lot of money... so you know what happens then, right?
For every 9 good 18 year old males who drive and never wreck there is one who goes out and causes a huge accident.... if the cost of that accident is $20,000 then they have to charge him and the other nine drivers $2000 each just to break even! I know its overly simplistic, but its the way insurance works.

Hey Guys, I've been following this thread and have been surprized by the constant mention of Mom and Dad, and how they fit into the equation of owning and insuring a Suby. Do what you're parents probably did. Get a good job, save your money. Buy a car you can afford. I'm 52 years old. I saved for over a year for a down payment. Now I have payments I can afford. My insurance is still too high, but that's part of owning a very fast car. Can you imagine a Porche, Vette or Viper owner looking at the i-club with all our childish crap. How embarrassing! AAA offers discounts to certain "professionals" based upon what college degree you hold. It is based on data they have that educated people may be less likely to drive unsafe cars at unsafe speeds (e.g. most doctors do not drive twenty year old chevies with bald tires).
AAA is not the cheapest insurance, but they are certainly in the lower half for the average guy with the average car. They do not like high performance cars, no insurance company does. But my experience is that they are a lot less likely to cancel you for a ticket or an accident than many of the lower priced insurance companies.
It is unfortunate, but insurance is a fact of owning a car. Remember the old saying, "speed costs money. how fast do you want to go?" Insurance is just part of the equation.
By the way, downshift, if you have uninsured motorist insurance and you can id the uninsured motorist who hit you, there is no deductible and your insurance company will go after the guy (at least that is how the auto club works). Good luck with the fix!
