It's definitely bigger and will suck more air in. I haven't measured it, but I'd say it's more than 1/2" and less than 1-1/2" It's noticeable though, especially when you're near a stock WRX. Also, if you autocross, it knocks you all the way to Street Modified...

I just got a STi scoop recently and holding it up to the stock it's looks to be twice the height of the original. Hope that helps.

Hood Scoop questions

1. What is the effect of the forward motion of the car when using the hood scoop?

2. Does it matter since it's not an engine intake, it just needs to cool the intercooler?

3. Would this effect measured on a dyno since the car is not moving?

To force air through the Intercooler. This cools the air that has gone through the hot turbocharger (compressor Side) and increases the air density. The more dense the air, the higher o2 content, the better the burning environment in the cylinder.

2. Does it matter since it's not an engine intake, it just needs to cool the intercooler?

Yes, for the reasons mentioned on question 1. Dense Air makes more horsepower.

3. Would this effect measured on a dyno since the car is not moving?
Only if a fan is placed in the path of the hood scoop simulating the actual road speed. This is a good point, if you dont blow air through the Intercooler while tuning on a dyne, you are probably not getting an accurate result.

Great questions.
