Mclaren F1 Team Fined $100 Mil

For the F1 fans out there. McLaren is out the the constructor's championship for the rest of 2007 and fined $100 mil for obtaining design secrets from Ferrari.

So, Ferrari wins the constructor championship.

wait..... so the "optain" secrets FROM ferrari.....and thus ferrari wins?????

Seems to me that ferrari might have something to do with this.

and the drivers tattled...and thus kept THEIR points...so they can get some fame while screwing the people that give them the car to drive in the first place??? F1 is too damn confusing. If I was McLaren I'd tell those drivers to **** off and get new ones. See how they like not getting any more points for THEMSELVES. Greedy sonsa*****es. Or suspend them so they can't drive for someone else.

not sure if the drivers have anything to do w/ the leak. this is quoted from speedtv:

"Coughlan also offered his version of the now-famous copy-store incident – where the whole scandal apparently was triggered by a clerk, who contacted Ferrari upon receiving the order to copy 780 pages of confidential Scuderia information."

$100 mil is a lotta money. I don't keep up with motorsports, but what happens if you refuse to pay it?

-you don't get to play in the F1 game I'd expect.
As it is they still don't get any team points this year, only driver points.

Nobody ever said it was cheap to play F1, and this is certainly meant to prove its even more expensive to "cheat" by getting insider information from the other team- (even if it is about the other team cheating) than to play "fair", (or apparently even to cheat yourself- provided you manage to keep it a secret).

The 100mil is also counting the loss of income that mclaren will receive from being kicked out.

My theory is that maybe the engineer that came from Ferrari to McLaren took the design docs over, with Ferrari's knowledge. The guys at McLaren looked at it, might or might have not used it to benefit their 2007 car. Ferrari started to lag behind McLaren so they blow the scandal. If Ferrari was winning all they way and leading the championship, they would have kept quiet...But McLaren is doing will this year coming off a poor stretch of a few years with reliability issues. They never had a DNF this year due to a mechanical. Go from poor reliability to zero this quick? Strange...

McLaren will appeal and the fine might get knocked down to a few mil.

The article referred to above said that a disgruntled Ferrari employee brought inside information about Ferrari that led to McLaren calling them out on illegal "moveable floors" which in turn revealed that the defecting engineer had in fact transferred secret information.

I don't know about any path of appeal though, I think once you have a ruling by the WMSC there's no higher authority...

Not trying to be a jerk, but.......

cheating is cheating whether you rat your own team out or not. More than likely they were convinced to be up front with all the information on the case that they were aware of. I would be surprised if the drivers were actually involved in the case whatsoever.

As for telling them to screw off, that is basically getting rid of two of the best drivers in formula 1. Not only do they drive well, but their presence brings in a lot of money since the are nearly celebrities in the racing world.

True. No appeals for McLaren. There were some indications of bringing it to civil courts by the losing team according to this Autoweek's article. But McLaren has not indication of doing so.

And I just read that article on "Coughlan Speaks Out on Stepneygate". One might assume Ferrari is getting back at McLaren for catching them cheating. And Ferrari one-upped on McLaren and said they were in "posession" of "technical specs". Interesting...

Guy's, Ferrari didn't do this on purpose to set up Mclaren... There not one upping Mclaren by saying they had their technical documents, they DID have them.

Nigel Stepney (I believe his name was) was a long time Ferrari guy and for one reason or another he was demoted and not giving a position he felt rightly his. Because of this he took Ferrari documentation and tried to copy it at a copy store in order to sabotage Ferrari by giving away there stuff to Mclaren and supposedly Renault team members. It just so happens the the lady's husband who works at the copy store also works for Ferrari. And I believe this is how the whole thing was brought about. The authorities contacted Stepney since he the lady knew his name, he then told the authorities the names of the people he gave the information to.

I may be wrong, but it seems like you guys (mainly Teamipr) are suspecting Ferrari purposely gave away there info so they could "trick" Mclaren into getting it so they could get them kicked out for the season. This is not the case at all..
