I'm searching for some component speakers any brands you guys would recomend? I was looking at some JBL's, kickers, and infinity speakers but really I'm open to any opinions. I dont know too much about speaker brands so any help would be appreciated!

K deciding between kickers and JBL's any input on the better quality brand?

i did a lot of research on the same topic about a year ago. I went with infinity's and am happy with the set up. I would recommend going with a small amp to push some power to them for a little more clarity and quality of sound.

If you want a lot of bang for the buck go with boston acoustic.

There are a ton of options available you haven't even listed. I personall would not buy any of those brands, I think they all lack something.

But first what I'd like to know - is how do you like a speaker to sound?

Do you like a thin sounding speaker, with a lot of brightness and attack from the tweeter? IE, crazy loud cymbal crashes, acoustic guitar you can feel, etc?

Or do you want a mellow speaker, that's generally soft all around?

Or do you want a speaker with heavy middbass, bright highs?

Or one with just heavy midbass and mellow highs?

In the end, if you are going to go with circuit city/best buy type speakers, just listen to them on the sound wall. Keep in mind they will sound more harsh and have less bass once in your car.

I always recommend the Diamond Audio Hex series. Either the 5.25 or the 6. The priece is very reasonable for what you get. These are some on the best sounding, best built speakers I've demoed. You can pick them up on ebay for like $250 bucks.

other option is getting GREAT coaxes...

why?

1. makes mounting easier... way easier.

2. all sounds will come from a single point instead of 2 or 3.

eh... not a fan of coaxes. Low stage.

I'ts important that the distance between the speakers and you are about the same.

Not quite as much that the difference between the mid and tweet is the same... if that makes any sense.

If you dont mind spending money the 6.5" Polk Signature Series are the best. Google them. They are light weight and not deep at all because they use a inverted magnet. The only down fall is the huge crossover. I put them in my sti and love them.

you would have to run an active set up, off of the Front and Rear rca outs on your head unit to delay the tweeters apart from the midranges.

So you would have to run a second set of amps, and find an active crossover to set the points.

And then it would be even nastier sounding for the passenger (if you care about that.)


Much easier to properly install the equipment in the first place.

Install and placement is 10x more valuable than effects like time correction.

The stock locations aren't the WORST... especially with weak tweeters that have a high crossover like on the CDT set. This set up doesnt sound great, though mostly because it's cdt ;) All my good stuff is in the other car. These speakers will eventually end up in the kick pods. Maybe with a-pillar tweets.

If you are willing to give up some imaging, these spots are fine. MHO, much better than a coax set up, because you will still get better imaging.

As far as decent coax? CDT Braxials if you can get them at a huge discount. At least 60-70% off MSRP.. Or Image Dynamics makes a 'convertible' speaker.

elemental designs has a convertible speaker too. It's a rebranded something-or-other.

I went with Infiniti Kappas and I love them. They aren't the brightest speakers, but they do sound pretty good. I would suggest some good tweeters. The speakers I bought are two-ways, but the attached tweeter just doesn't do well enough for my taste. I prefer to have a full spread of the spectrum so I would also include a good sub.

However, if I would redo my purchase, I would probably look at JL speakers or Boston Accoustic. I am a big fan of both.

I would suggest a high-quality amp to run the speakers though. It will sound much cleaner (with a bigger range) than running off of the headunit.

Just my two cents.....

I had 4 Kappa component speakers in my Integra with and infinity six channel amp and i thought they sounded great. Once you tune them right they sound better than most. I heard the mid-level JL audio components and I wasnt impressed. It could have been the way the shop had them set up but im going with infinity on my rex.

I would consider any infinity speaker to be a bit lacking in midbass, with too much emphasis on (unrealistic) highs that can tend to sound shrill. I'm not a fan, but they are a popular speaker.


For a mellow set with lots of midbass, the CDT set the incorporates a soft dome tweeter and the M6 midbass.

Remember, CDT is a good deal at about 60-70% off. But NOT at msrp.

OLD dynaudio has solid midbass, and very soft highs with quick roll off. New ones are lot brighter (but still fairly soft.)

never ran a passive system...

actually, the delay is just from left and right.

currently run coaxes in the STi and a pair of 10+ year old MB QUART 218s in my toyota truck (when MB QUART was still making quality stuff...)

trust me, i have listened to footwell pods, to horns (anyone remember harry kimura's acura legend?) that got popular in the early to mid 90s (been into car audio since mid 80s).

even the top competitors who had horns used digital delays. and back then, they were bulky and expensive.

then i went to an IASCA show (late 90s) and found that they changed the rules from dual judges to a single judge, when it came to sound quality, on the way home i bought a sony digital/elec crossover device.

havent looked back since.
