I know what to get for a desktop, but I am at a loss for laptops.

ive only had one seAgate drive fail on me ever... compared to numerous older WD hard drives (their new ones are good). Hitatchi drives are the worste ive evere dealt with.

you may have had good experiences with seagate, but judging from numerous user reviews from people when I was looking for a new HDD, I'd suggest going a different route. I'd rather back up my data and use a HDD whose manufacturer is going to stand behind a product when its more likely to break, rather than risk it with one that if it does break, I'm on my own. Oh, and I know the wife and daughter of the CEO of seagate (who just passed away) and I'd rather not support them
