View Full Version : Ice on Intercooler????
NRTmotorsports 04-06-2003, 11:29 AM I was thinking, has anyone tried running the 1'4 with a bag on ice on the Intercooler or do you think that would hurt you time because you have little air being forced into it, I was thinking of trying this any thoughts?
jriggs 04-07-2003, 12:43 PM chill the intercooler and remove the bag of ice right before you stage....i've seen people do this......not really sure how much it helps.....but i would think it has some effect. i've been told you really have to chill the intercooler.......leave the ice on for at least 30 minutes, no less than that!!!!
swain 04-16-2003, 04:09 PM Or you can try using an external NOS system that sprays NOS on the intercooler. It basically freezes it and lowers the air charge temperature.
landsharkca 04-18-2003, 05:51 PM you cant run with ice on intercooler because you car cant leak any water on track
nos freezing works about 10 to 50 hp
you may want to look at nx n-cooler system i personally do
not like it if you wait a few months i will hopefully have built a better system talk later

brizey 05-09-2003, 08:34 AM Will the STi system be able to be adapted to the WRX?
WRX34 06-02-2003, 10:33 PM I use ice on my TMIC, intake and TB and anything else that cooler=better. Yeah it does help...I couldn't break from 13.9 all night until I did this and I pulled lower 60' and 13.8 all night after that and removal of the pass. side fog light for even more air.
Oh yeah...DON'T leave it on the IC when u go up to the tree...it's against most places policies to have any liquids spilling onto track surfaces anyways but yeah...it'd hurt ya more anyways.

BigSteve 06-08-2003, 08:25 PM Last time I checked it was against all tracks policies to have fluids leaking on the track. And trust me if you try the tech guy will tell you to remove it before the run. And if you decide not to listen to him you will find a very unhappy result. Because chances are your ice back will rip going down the strip and pee all over the lane. Not only will you find an unhappy track crew but whats worse (and more dangerous) an very unhappy crowd of waiting racers. The lines are long enough without someone doing something like that.
fastrotaries 06-18-2003, 10:37 PM It can greatly help you fight heat soak. Haven't tried it on the wrx, but on my TII it helped drop my times from 15.1 to a 14.73. Not bad for a car with 138K. I've purchased a garden sprayer and add ice water. i dump some ice on the IC and the occasionally spray the ice water over the ice. Helps out quite a bit. I also spray some on the radiator at the strip and autocross, to keep temps low.
Kevin M 06-19-2003, 01:12 AM Uhhhhh... a bag of ice will BLOCK your intercooler. NFG. The nitrous thing works though, as does the STi sprayer, and those are legal at NHRA events AFAIK.
SuboobaruWRSEX 10-20-2003, 11:10 PM You gus know keyboard cleaner. CO2 in a hand held bottle. That thing frosts up pretty quick when spraying it. Wonder how that would do to chill the I/C before the race? Cheaper than a kit if you dont run often. Takin my Grand National to the track this weekend, ill try it and get back to you. You can also use it to freeze bolts so they shrink and it's easier to get em off.

dropkick_muppet 10-20-2003, 11:16 PM if you're going the handheld sprayer route, i wouldn't use keyboard cleaner. go to an electronics store, and buy the stuff used for keeping circuts cool when they're being tested. i forget what it's called, but it'll chill things down to like -140F. when i was a kid, i'd use it to freeze snails and then shatter them like you'd do with liquid nitrogen.
that said, i think icing the intercooler before a run would work pretty damn well, since during short runs the i/c works more like a heat sink than a heat exchanger. for permanet use, a CO2 sprayer would be your best bet. colder than water, cheaper than NOS, and readily available.

Hmm, liquid nitrogen, now there's some cold stuff. Hmm . . .
dropkick_muppet 10-21-2003, 12:06 AM yeah, heat cycle your i/c from 150F+ to about -150 and watch you boost leak from the cracks...
dashiet 11-05-2003, 03:24 AM lol is there really a difference?
WindingRoad 11-10-2003, 03:25 PM damm, i feel bad for those snails.
i heard that the water sprays don't do more than 1-2 hp for the sti's
Cannon_Fodder 11-12-2003, 04:04 AM there is one trick used here is to plumb up a CO2 fire extingusher to spray over the I/C, but remember that you don't want to suck the CO2 into the induction!!!!!!
TWRXDELSOL 11-13-2003, 08:22 AM What about dry ice?
Cannon_Fodder 11-18-2003, 06:31 AM Dry ice placed on the I/C works well cos it does not drop water and as it evaporates it cools well.
Vins02wrx 01-30-2004, 09:00 PM I was going to try this idea but could not do it because since my car is an auto it takes forever to spool up I have the header and gutted uppipe and full turbo back exhaust setup. so if i would ice the i/c it would alreadly be hot by the time I hit the lights since when I heat the car up it spools up faster, i guess it is just tough to launch the auto just wondering if anyone else have had problems spooling up the autos even with a full exhaust.
steedsta 02-18-2004, 01:24 AM Cut your wiendshield whiper squarter hoses, or at the track put another one on and get two of the squarters inside your hoodscoop and aim them twards your intercooler. if you want put ice in your resavore.
that might help a little.
steedsta 02-18-2004, 01:25 AM and just hold the button all the way down the track between each shift
esracer 03-05-2004, 12:55 PM The windshield squirter idea is a nifty idea, I might have to try that sometime.

i have the same problem with spooling up with an auto.
i feel ya, it sucks!

nic3krnnamja83 03-05-2004, 05:19 PM if you put ice on top of the intercooler the temp will only change from the top i would think, so wut matters is the core temp right? just my 2 cents
02silversuby 03-23-2004, 01:06 AM ITS A MYTH, I have two friends that tried this one had a bag of Ice and the other used compressed air up side down they ran the same time or slower. N intercooler sspray kit NAWWZZZZZZZZ.
