Looks like most of the gas stations in SF switched over to those @#$%@#% coin-operated air+water stations while I wasn't looking!
Anyone know of a station that still has free air+water?? One in the Sunset or Richmond District would be great. (not those "complimentary air+water for our customers" deals either......it's a pain in the a$# to keep hounding the attendants/cashiers to turn the machines on) On

Just a heads up it is CA state law for service stations to provide air and water to customers. Go inside and ask the teller to turn the compressor on. They all have buttons behind the desk.
Ijust read the rest of your post, how long does it take you to air up your tires

so what you need to do is say " $0.01 on pump #3 please"
that makes you a customer.

thx for the tip, mrruins. that chevron on 24th & geary is a little out of my way, but i'll keep it in mind when my tires need some boost.
if any of you know of more stations w/the good old FREE & non-coin operated air+water in SF, please post up. i'm sure this will come in handy for others as well.

I got tired of searching for gas stations with free water and air because half the time some clown is hogging the air/water station with a broken down POS that's overheating.
You might consider buying a small 120-volt air compressor to inflate tires like I did. The 12-volt models are too slow to fill tires. They use standard fittings and I added the standard tire refill nozzle with squeeze handle like gas stations used to have. Just don't trust the built-in pop-up pressure gauge - its readings are off by at least 10% compared with my digital pressure gauge.

haven't been to the lombard chevron, but i frequent the 19th+Irving & Geary+Arguello ones too, JZ007. it sucks that they have those crappy coin-op dealios now. the attendants are always real cool about hitting the "complimentary" switches for me, but it's just a pain to have to go inside and try to grab their attention while they're waiting on customers.
i have been meaning to get one of those portable air compressors like Wingless Wonder suggested but just haven't gotten around to it. i already know those gauges on the station compressors are junk and the pencil type portable ones are pretty iffy. i had to use a pencil one yesterday tho....lost my dial one. it was a real nice little number w/a bleeder button and brass bezel+fittings too.

Try the Chevron on Ocean across from the 24 Hour Fitness (not sure of the cross street). Last time I was there the air and water were on and ready to go.

I believe it's required by California law that gas stations provide free air/water to anyone, not just customers. I'm not 100%, but it makes sense.

Existing law requires every service station in this state to
provide, during operating hours, water, compressed air, and a gauge
for measuring air pressure, to the public for use in servicing any
passenger or commercial vehicle, as defined. Existing law provides
that the failure of an owner or manager of a service station to have
adequate water and air facilities for use by the public for 5
consecutive working days constitutes a rebuttable presumption that
the owner or manager has intentionally violated these provisions. An
intentional violation of these provisions is an infraction
punishable by a fine not to exceed $50 per day.
This bill would require that these air and water services be made
available at no cost to customers who purchase motor vehicle fuel, as
defined. The bill would require service stations to place and
maintain a specified sign regarding these services.
