I have made several visits to DB Tuned in the past week to meet Paul and Rick who are both great guys. I had a chance to hang out in the shop, play with the dyno, show Paul around the ProTuner software a bit, and even meet some of the SRIC crowd.
Paul and I seem to agree on a lot of things having to do with business ethics and customer service in general, so we hashed out a plan that satisfied both of us and would make it possible for me to provide custom tuning using the DB Tuned Mustang Dyno. We figured this would benefit both of us and more importantly will be very convenient for anyone wanting to get a cusom tune from me in the Sacramento/Roseville area. I will be charging $175/hour for general custom dyno tuning and all AP/Dyno Tune package prices as mentioned on my website still apply.
Please feel free to ask any general questions here or PM or e-mail me directly with any specifics or to schedule an appointment. Otherwise, I hope I'll see most of you at the grand opening "shindig."
Thanks

What am I?! Chopped liver?! ;)
While discussing the future of Subaru performance work in this area, Ed & I had a lot of the same ideas, and a few different ones.
Ed has done some very impressive work in the ECU tuning dept.
I had some reservations about just how good/safe a "road tuned" map could be, so we threw his wagon on the dyno & compared the results; all torque/power numbers were within a few points of each other.
I know some here have their opinions, and that's exactly what they are.
And the past is exactly that.

Ed, I know I got labeled as one of the "bashers". My only beef was with the whole safety/legality issue of a road dyno, and wasn't intended to be personal. I'm glad to see you with access to the Mustang dyno, and I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of bad-ass cars come out of this deal! :) Good luck to you and DBTuning!

I agree 100% with sperry, the reason that I had beef was because of the 'road dyno' safety issues. Good luck in your future business ventures with DB Tuned.

So is dbtuned doing their own tuning as well? Do the two tuners offer the same packages (i.e.: Cobb AP) or is one of you going to offer other solutions as well?
And I think the ECutek question was quite legitimate, especially for those of us that invested quite a bit of money into that system. While the Cobb AP seems like a good choice, especially for those of us that want to switch maps (maybe I'll convert when the smaller version comes out), I need someone who can tune ECUtek for the time being.

That's correct, Paul is also doing his own tuning at the shop. Pricing is similar, although I don't know about any package deals that Paul may offer.
As far as Ecutek, Paul does have the software but we're having issues getting it running on his new laptop and Ecutek isn't being too helpful so far. I have personally stopped using Ecutek ever since my laptop was stollen with my Ecutek dongle and they wanted an obscene amount for replacement software. I now tune primarily using ProTuner or any other user tune-able systems. Most of my previous Ecutek customers have managed to trade their ECU's and get an AP.
Thanks

I've been told that Mike at Gruppe-S can work on Ecutek maps. That may end up being the best option, given the problems with the DB tuned Ecutek licensing/ software.
Eventually, I'll probably end up with the AP.

I have Ecutek also. But, after talking with Paul about his Ecutek license problems, and not wanting to wait after upgrading my turbo to a VF-34 and supporting mods (thus necessitating a retune anyway), I decided to buy an Accessport, then have Paul do a custom tune on it. I thought having the luxury of switchable maps would be a nice option for the future. But, I also wanted it done in time for the upcoming HPDE at T-Hill on the 21st.

I agree, compared to Cobb only for the map switching, otherwise they are pretty much identical.

Don't forget the much easier transfer of license you get with the AP. Not to mention, for a tuner, the live tuning features make our jobs much easier. Honestly, Ecutek is going to need to do some major work to regain atleast some of the market share they've lost and are going to lose to Cobb.

+1, and their hasn't really been any rumors of them even remotely trying to do so, Not to mention you can Check your CEL's and reset your ecu within seconds with the Cobb AP, and read Live Boost... To me the best thing is, is one time I was over-boosting causing the car to pull timing, so I called up Mike and he took some boost off, sent me a new map.... I uploaded it to the access port, and into my car... Problem was fixed, if I still had my ECUTek that wouldn't even had been an option... off to hayward I would have to drive to fix a 10 second problem

Yeah actually, they've been 'working on something' for quite a while. ECUtek just tends to not make announcements until the product is ready. I held out lots of hope for the product, but its been quite a while. I don't think it'll ever come out.
EDIT: Finally found the old threads from PDX. Its almost a year old now, and its not like ECUtek to announce something and then wait a year to release it. Oh well, Cobb AP seems like the better solution now-a-days :(

Great point. The ability to easily send a customer a revised map and have them flash it to their ECU is extremely useful. Over the past couple of weeks I've actually been remote tuning an STI and a WRX in Michigan with great results. With Ecutek this would never be possible. I've also used this feature to fix minor glitches for customers in much higher elevations as well as send out general updates as my maps become more robust. I've always been a fan of the AP from a technological standpoint... it just lacked the tuning software in the past. Now that ProTuner is out and has proven to be very powerful, I truly believe it will take a long time for Ecutek to catch up.

I know cobb and accessecu are practically the same.
