Lug Nuts

At the last Install Day I noticed a car with aftermarket lug nuts. I need to replace my stock ones so I am looking for suggestions. I am looking at titanium or forged aluminum high strength lug nuts.

Thanks.

McGard Spline Drive lugnuts with matching wheel locks. They are pricey, but they are the best.

Oh, and Titanium lugnuts with steel studs = bad idea.

aluminum ones have a tendoncy to strip out, since the majority of them are made with cheap 60-series aluminum and are not hard anodized.

there are a few GOOD aluminum lug brands out there, but they use 70-series alloy and hard ano the lugs to make them more ruggid.

but remember, aluminum will always be softer than steel and getting a lugnut fused onto the lug is a nightmare thing to solve. 99% of the time resulting in moderate to major damage to any wheel.

i have never seen true titanium lugs, but i have seen lots of aluminum with a goldish grey anodizing and its been called "titanium" but it's only titanium in color.
Ti is also less plyable and subject to cracking rather than malforming via stretching.

your best bet is a good quality steel lugnut, somehting like the mcguards splined ones that have the rotating seat so they don't damage the wheels as bad when torqued to the right settings.

I havn't personally used Ray's lugnuts due to the rarity of them, but from what I've heard, they are seven sided for theft protection. Of course, that won't stop anyone with 1. the key, or 2. a tool to remove stripped lugnuts. Hence the reason why I prefer standard McGard style wheel locks. Oh, and McGard makes the OEM Subaru lugs/locks.

I run McGard's on Terri's LGT and with my track wheels. I run Rays on the S202 wheels only because they came with them. The Rays are superlight and super expensive. For the money, you can't go wrong with the McGard's.

McGards are $75 ($65 for chrome) and Rays are $110. The difference is not that much...

The Rays I have listed at over $150, but maybe they came down in price.
