2002 WRX Blown Tranny, What are my options...?
Hi,
I have a 2002 and the tranny just went on it. (1st gear is gone).
Just wondering what my options are.
I'm assuming that Subaru will not replace it under warranty.
Am I best getting a shop to rebuild it, getting a new tranny, or popping a 2003 tranny in there.
Thanks,
- Dan

You can certainly try to have Subaru cover it under warranty, but I think you're assuming correctly that they won't cover it. But it's worth a shot.
A 2003 tranny isn't going to do you any good. It's the same as the 02.
It's just your gears that are bad, so you don't necessarialy need to replace the whole thing. You can just replace the gearset with another stock set, or you could replace them with an aftermarket set. The aftermarket's are expensive, but are probably your best bet if you have to replace them anyway.

Thanks for the info.
I thought that the 2003 WRX tranny was better than the 2002 one. Is that not the case?
Also, wouldn't there be other potential damage from the pieces of metal that have run around in the tranny from the blown first gear?
I guess I'm looking for a recomendation on what my most economical option is to get something that will be pretty durable.
Thanks

No problem.
I know that the 02 and 03 tranny's and gears are the same. I remember hearing something about them making improvements in 05 or 06, but I don't know that for sure.
When you change your gear(s), they'll need to open the tranny and clean out all the remains of your first gear. You should be fine if it is cleaned well.
I can't say that there is a very "economical" way to change gears, but if you're looking for longevity, as well as better performance, then the RA gearset is the way to go. I think there are other companies that make gears as well. If you're going to be spending money on a new gearset anyway, why not upgrade?

from what i understood the 03 tranny gears are almosts as strong as the ra gear set. but i'm not sure on that. I blew my tranny out racing on the drag strip. Now with the 03 gears i have been driving the same way for six months now and no problems
