Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

2.5 RSs started in 1998 the first and the last year for the dohc 2.5 165 hp. then came the sohc 2.5 more reliable same HP. 1.8 imprezas lasted till 1997 i believe with 110 hp, 2.2s lasted untill 2000 with power ranging from 135 from 1993 up to 1997 with 137 to 142 in 1999. awd wasnt standard on imprezas till 1996.

The RS has shorter gears than the WRX or later models. Get a late gen CG8 97+. You won't regret it. I think this was the best gen... not a big fan of the new WRX after 2001. The SOHC will give you gobbs of torque, especially after you turbo it. But stock is fine. Plus I have a ton of used parts for that. Every one now a day wants a CG8, expecially the rally guys. With a little TLC you could make back some money. Pully runs about $120 + Light flywheel around $250+ (Although I'll sell you one used for $100) ECU wart for about $199 12hp gain. And cold air intake are super easy and cheap to make. Cost around $50.

If you buy a civic I'll punch you.

I would look for a 98-99 RS. That's what I'm doing currently. I have a 1.8, and I love it as a daily driver, does excellent in the winter. It's torquey, but not very fast.
The 2.2 is decent, but the 2.5 is preferable. As far as the GSR, it depends on what your looking for. What kind of weather to you drive in? Do you just want a fairly quick 1/4 mi car? Integras are nice cars, but I fell in love with the subaru's AWD and reliability.

I bought my 2000 RS for $4,200 with 126K and have no regrets , I had a 1.8 that was ok , but not fast , and a 2.2 that seemed like a rocket compared to a 2.0 nat. asp. Lancer , but the 2.5 is an awesome car in the snow of upstate NY
