I just stumbled on the G-Tech Performance meter www.gtechpro.com it looks like the coolest thing ever!
I read some reviews and they say it's pretty accurate.
I just can't figure out why I've never heard of it till now.
It would save a lot of time at the track if I could find a deserted stretch of road.

it works well if you have it mounted correctly. and it's not too expensive. a great tool for measuing very copmlex measurments.

it works okay. when my car was stock it said i ran 14.3 then when i went to the track i ran 14.3. the faster i got the more off it was. when i ran a 12.0 on the track the g-tech said 12.4.

I'm buying one.
My car is stock so I gotta have a baseline before I start any mods.

www.rev-lite.com in AU

i think there are local US distributors now.
I'm still trying out diff location for this... initially on the steering column, then moved to near the clock (got the idea from Peug WRC), then further up on the dashboard near winshield...

You should also check out GtechPro since it has built-in shift light function, but i'm not sure how well it works.
