While reading another thread on a damaged EJ207, I figured I'd post a picture of my own damaged motor from a while back (last december)!

Good job!

My thoughts are always if your going to break something, do it well.

Thats one hell of a job :)

Well, what I originally thought to be a cam clearance issue (which I thought I fixed by adjusting the clearance) turned out to be a bent valve that wasn't sitting properly...

The motor broke an exhaust valve while cruising at high speed on the highway... which subsequently broke the other valves and ate their way through the piston... I found 1 valve head in the oil pan!

I rebuilt the motor on a new EJ22T shortblock, and took out the holed piston and keep it as a souvenir!

Here's a picture of the cylinder head, notice how the hollow valve stems are still in there:

ooooo sodium filled valves...

what did you do to reapir the head ? or did you start over

I just bought a new head, they're not that expensive if you get them in Japan... around $400.

Man, that's looks bad. And the picture looks good. ;)

So, does that mean a bented valve will continue to work
until you push it at a very high speed for a long duration?

scooby5, did you see any symptom before it broke?
Any funny noise? Maybe you can give us something to
look for when it happen to our car.

twlai,

As I mentionned in a previous post, I had "mis"diagnosed the problem to cam clearance. The cams on that cylinder were clicking away a bit too loud so I figured I'd check the clearance and it was off, maybe a bit too off in hindsight.

But I thought none of it and simply swapped the underbucket shims to thicker ones, and off I went... It all went to hell on the highway, I guess the stress on the valve from being slightly bent was enough under higher rev to break it.
