Yikes. -scu scooby5 11-26-2002, 05:25 AM Well, what I originally thought to be a cam clearance issue (which I thought I fixed by adjusting the clearance) turned out to be a bent valve that wasn't sitting properly... The motor broke an exhaust valve while cruising at high speed on the highway... which subsequently broke the other valves and ate their way through the piston... I found 1 valve head in the oil pan! I rebuilt the motor on a new EJ22T shortblock, and took out the holed piston and keep it as a souvenir! The cams on that cylinder were clicking away a bit too loud so I figured I'd check the clearance and it was off, maybe a bit too off in hindsight. But I thought none of it and simply swapped the underbucket shims to thicker ones, and off I went... It all went to hell on the highway, I guess the stress on the valve from being slightly bent was enough under higher rev to break it.
